After removing some junk software off my son’s computer, I went to the System Configuration Utility and discovered a line under the Startup section that reads:

    Tkbell.exe Registy [Machine Run] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_0B\envntsvc.exe -osboot

I suspect RealOne as having something to do with it, but I rather not uninstall it since he prefers it to Windows Media Player. If you have RealOne, do you have this line? Is this some sort of spy ware? How do I get rid of it?

Had a look on my machine, there is no file called Tkbell.exe on my machine. You could be right about it being something to do with realplayer. I have a reference to it in my registry, under Explorer bar, as I have a shortcut to realplayer on my main explorer bar, so it may be something to do with that, sorry I carnt be of any more help. I can only find a dead reference to it at www.google.com Cheers Chris

    Hi George S.
It's absolutely Real Player. It's a shame that he prefers it, as it's a nasty piece of software. (personal opinion) Terribly proprietary, bloated, spreads it's files all over your computer, and has a nasty habit of calling home for it's updates.

I agree, the only really good thing about realplayer is that if you have real producer as well (for editing and producing .rm files) you can convert .avi/.wmp files to one eigth the size of those formats, and can also compile video clips one eigth the size of .avi's, making very small files for long mpegs/movies for transmission by email, etc. The only other thing I use it for is to watch BBC News24 over a coffee in the morning! Otherwise, yes it is invasive, but with the right software, you can severely limit its broadcasting capabilities

Thanks all! It may be on my kids PC, but that'll be to only one. I don't have broadband yet so I don't bother trying to watch all the video clips on the *many* sites who have partnered with Real.
