We use Office 4.3 at work to write letters and it is OK for what we need. If I was to upgrade to the latest version of Word, would the new version of word read my old Office 4.3 (Word version 6.0) letter templates or would I have to recreate them? Thanks!

It will certainly read them however it will want to save any changes in the new format which would then not be able to be read under Word 6

The default save would certainly be the version you were running but if you drop way down the list with 'save as' you will see 6.0/95 as an option.

If you need to save as the older version you will need to make sure that Word IS NOT set to autosave while you are working.

That answers the second question, but can Office 4.3 be installed in Windows XP? Thanks!

Probably yes. Worth a try and the worst that will happen is that it won't work.

    But since you posted
If I was to upgrade to the latest version of Word, would the new version of word read my old Office 4.3
I assumed you wanted the newer version.

Not a good idea to try and install both versions I don't think.

If you try the install on XP, then suggest you create a manual restore point in case of problems. XP may/should create an auto restore point, but to be sure create a manual one. Then if you need to uninstall you can roll back XP to a clean (pre Word 4.3) state. After installation you might need to try compatibility mode, if available? (right click on the word shortcut and select 95, 98 or NT4.0 compatability mode) if any problems running under XP.

Office 4.3. Isn't that the version with Word 6? What a splendid word processor. The last version of Word where you didn't have to switch off all the automatic rubbish after an install! Those good old days when your word processor put on to the page what you typed. When you could start a line "1.5 mm is the gap..." without Word converting it into a numbered list. When applying a style occurred when you told the system which style to use, not because the first word happened to be in the same format as a previous line start. When you could safely type in a URL without it automatically changing to a hyperlink.

I have to stop - I'm starting to swoon.
