    Hi,

I just installed my modem in Windows 98 SE. It is Lucent Win Modem. however, the port is set to COM3. I know that this modem require COM1 to function, and when it is in COM3, it cannot be detected by internet explorer. Any methods to change it to COM1? I am sure that the communications port is installed and working.

    your help will be appreciated

Is Com 1 already in use - serial mouse for example? If this is the case try switching the mouse to Com 2, remove the modem through Device Manager and reinstall.

i do not think COM 1 is used. Even if it is used, can u please tell me how to switch. I am still figuring out a way to switch, and if i know how, i would have fixed it.

    Thank you for your help

If memory serves me right - running XP now - Control Panel > Modems > Properties? As far as I remember internal modems tend to set up on Com 3.

Have you loaded the modem drivers?

All Internal Modems that I have had used anything from COM3 on up.

Also it may not be a Port problem. ( usually isn't ) It may be an IRQ conflict with ( usualy ) the Audio Card.

You would be far better off to get an External and plug it into external Serial Port 1 or 2.
