    Hi,

I've a problem in converting one DVD to VCD. Yes, one DVD only, since I don't have problem with other DVD titles. I can convert it using Amigo DVD Ripper. This proggie has no choice for IFO or VOB files. But the result VCD has no subtitle. The DVD have both English or Malay subtitles. I choose English subtitle on the option, but the result has no subtitle. And then I choose Malay subtitle with same result. I did the conversion both on Windows 98 SE or Windows XP Professional. Both with same result: no subtitle on the VCD version.

Fyi, the DVD can be played on many DVD player proggies. All can not show the subtitle, although I choose the subtitle. Only when it played on Windows Media Player 9 (under Windows XP), then the subtitle is displayed. When I tried to convert the DVD to VCD using other converter proggies, the process is stopped prematurely at the very beginning process with some error.

I don't know anything about DVD and how they work. So, any guidance, explanation and solutions to my problem is much appreciated. The question is what should I do to include the subtitle in the conversion with the result VCD having the subtitle?

    TIA,

    Yasmin

First, I would get DVDShrink. It's free, and allows for a full dvd backup to dvdr, including all the subs, and I've never had a problem.
If it can't read your dvd, rip the dvd first with DVD Decrypter, then Shrink it, using "Full backup ".
Once you have it ripped, you need an authoring app to get it in to (S)VCD with the subs, and not many can do it, including the subs. VCDEasy is one that might work.

You might try Super DVD Ripper - there is a trial period and, although I haven't used the facility, subtitles can be included.

    Hi, All!

Thanks for the responses. I tried your suggestions. I downloaded the rippers dan tried it. All failed! I think the problem is on the DVD Title. It seems the DVD used a non-standard format. So, some DVD player proggies can not show the subtitles, although I choose the subtitles correctly. So does with the ripper. It can convert the DVD to VCD, but can not show the subtitles. Fyi, I have no problems with other DVD Titles.

The last time, I tried Nero Show Time to watch the DVD. It could show the subtitles more complete than Windows Media Player.

Thanks anyway for your kind support.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin

The next step would be to get DVD Decrypter, and use it to rip the dvd to your hard drive. Another option is to get FairUse Wizard and see if that can rip it to avi with the subs. Both are free.

DVD2SVCD is a freeware that will rip subs and all. It looks intimidating, but read the "ABOUT" tab.

I'm doing it right this minute "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo!" The process is a bit slow. I had a faster rip. But it was a bit jerky.

    Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded Super DVD Ripper and DVD Decripter. Both are wonderful proggies, especially DVD Decripter. Super DVD Ripper stop responding at the beginning of conversion process. It works great for the other DVD Titles. And I'm still can not convert the DVD Title with the subtitles. The result is good VCD, but there is no subtitles. In the option, I choose the subtitles. But it didn't work. I'm still downloading DVD2SVCD. I hope this proggie can convert the dvd with its subtitles. The problem DVD is Musashi Miyamoto (starring Toshiro Mifune, the best and greatest Japanese actor), a 1954 Japanese film that won Oscar for the best foreign movie in 1955.

Meanwhile I can not download FairUse Wizard up to now. I'm looking it using Google, but the links are not working. I don't know why. Maybe it's caused by firewall proggie. I'm using Kerio Personal Firewall. So, if you know the correct path/link to download it, I would greatly appreciate your help to share it.

Once again, thanks for the support so far.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin

    Hi, Reboot et al.,

At last I can download Fair Use 0.30 (although it's still in beta version and I wary to use it for the possible bugs), it can show the subtitles in the preview during the process of conversion. And only the FU that can show the subtitles in the result of conversion. But, I can not play the DivX AVI movie with any DivX player. And I also must demux (?) the audio which I don't know how to do it and with what softwares to do it. Further, how to combine the video (DivX/AVI) and the audio and with what softwares, too? Since it seems that the video and the audio is separated. And, is there any softwares to make a VCD from DivX? I usually use Nero burning rom to burn a VCD from MPEG and AVI. But DivX is an MPEG4, although its extension is .avi.

Thank you for the guidance so far.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin

I haven't found any bugs, even in the beta versions.
When you say you can't play the avi in any player, when you try, what happens? The default settings should rip the audio and video and subs all at once.
Try installing the DivX 3.11Alpha codecs. They are the DivX Mpeg4 that you're probably missing (they're free).
Get Mainconcept, TMPGEnc, or CCE to encode the avi to mpeg, for (S)VCD, or once you have the DivXMpeg4 codec's installed, Nero will probably do it.

I haven't made any DVDs, but a bunch of VCDs. I found that sometimes subtitles do get problematic. I was trying to "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo," but my normal software compliement either couldn't do it or did with Black on Black. I could see the subtitles, but not read them. I did manage to make a VCD copy with WinCopyDVD, but the movie gets jerky in parts.

One of the solutions I use is to hook the DVD player to the computer and record it from there using Virutal VCR. It gets the right sound track and subtitles. I got "Chusingura" that way.

I'm looking for the Chinese version of the Samuari Trilogy. I don't know what it's called. But Celestial Films has the rights to the entire Shaw Bros. catalog.

Toshiro Mifune was my favorite actor that my older son's middle name is Toshiro and the younger son is Akira (for Kurosawa). It's sad they both passed recently.

    Hi, Reboot.

Thanks for your further guidance. I agree that the proggie has no bugs up to now. I installed the DivX codecs, and it run well, except there is no audio and the subtitle is larger than the original DVD so that texts at both ends are cut-off. I installed DivX 4.02. Is this later codecs the cause of these problem? If not, what should I do now to make the video, audio, and subtitles converted into one DivX file using the Fiar Use? Fyi, when I converted the DVD Title into DivX using the FU (so, before installing the codecs), I saw the subtitle is take the space of the video on the preview pane.

    Thanks again.

    Ray,

All of the problematic DVD titles are old Japanese films. I got Musashi Miyamoto Trilogy (Samurai I, II and III) and I also got Seven Samurai. All can not be converted into VCD with the subtitles. The DVD Titles could be converted into VCD, but without subtitles. So, it's useless because the audio language is Japanese. I think what you did is the only solution. But to do it, we must have the DVD player and the video card. I only have the DVD-ROM and CD-R/W. I ordered the VCD version of above movies, but the shop said there is no VCD version available.

    Fyi, I also ordered:

    - Kagemusha - The Shadow Warrior (Akira Kurosawa)
    - RAN (Akira Kurosawa)
    - Sanjuro (Akira Kurosawa)
    - Stray Dog (Akira Kurosawa)
    - The Hidden Fortress (Akira Kurosawa)
    - Throne Of Blood (Toshiro Mifune, Isuzu Yamada, Akashi Shimura) (Akira Kurosawa)
    - Zatoichi - The Blind Swordsman (Shintaro Katsu, Kanako Higuchi, Ken Ogata)

I got the new Zatoichi, but it's full of blood. I prefer the original Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu). I also got Kurosawa's Dreams.

Toshiro Mifune (actor) and Akira Kurosawa (director) are my favorites, too. Good to know that you give your kids the name of Toshiro and Akira.

    Thanks for your sharing.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin
