Recently had an external hard drive to crash. Purchased a data recovery program and was able to get almost 100% of the data back. Problem: In doing so, windows or the program wrote temporary data to my C: drive. (The recovered data was saved to a different drive other than C: ) Instead of being nearly 20 gigs of free space, I am down to less than 100 mb. I have searched the directory of the data recovery program, windows and other temp directories and found nothing out of the ordinary....or at least nothing taking up mega space. Where can I look for useless files taking up space? What files other than the standard .tmp, .bak, .~ stuff can I delete to free up space?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Jameson: I assume you are running XP, I think what I would do is run scandisk and defrag. I have had programs report I was out of space when I was not, this fixed that. Maybe file table corrupted.

Right click my computer, click manage, right click C drive. click properties, Click disk cleanup, check all boxes, and ok.

Next, on same window, click tools tab. select error checking, select automatically fix file system errors. You will get a window telling you that the drive is in use. select fix on next boot.

Restart computer, disk will be checked. after check and restart, go back to manage, see how much space you now have. defrag, even if it says you don't need it.

Hope this helps, post back results good or bad.

Thanks guys......seems it was just a mix up somewhere in windows and it's ways of reporting. I ran scandisk and everything is back to normal. Another case of tryng to take something simple and making it something complex. I was trying to out think myself.

    Thanks for all the ideas.

Hey, I outhink myself all the time. But that's not a bad thing, contributes to humility when I discover how dumb I am.
