using windows ME, and the issue i am having involves both IE 6 and Netscape 7.1. Neither browser will open javascript windows. I believe that they both worked before i installed spybot. i have since tried to put everything back that spybot removed, but to no avail. I have done virus checks, and done system restore, as well as disk defrag. Please advise...

    Hi wilcoxdj,

Can you recall what SpyBot removed? Do you have the Sun Java plugin installed for Netscape, and do you also use it for Internet Explorer?

Does anything happen for you on this page: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/radar/loop/DS.p19r0/si.kvbx.shtml

If not, list the error for us, and thanks!

nothing in the above messages has done anything to help. the national weather service opened a new full page that included a javascript enabled applet, i think my issue is when trying to open somthing that shows as
    javascript: ShowLarge('/.....). :confused, and lost.

and ramona, i don't know what spybot removed, i have since had spybot replace it all, in efforts to save javascripts. yes, i use it for ie and i beleive that i have the java pugin installed.

    thanks.

Hi java and javascript are despite there similar names two entirely different things. Did you have a third party program like a browser enhancer installed, Spybot's find list should always be scrutinized before removal. Try IE tools/ advanced and disable "display an notification about every script error "

Can you give a link for this problem to occur in both IE and Netscape?
I found an interesting link http://forums.devshed.com/t13263/s.html
It may not help, but you can see possible complications.
You say Spybot. Do you mean Spybot Search and Destroy? But, it does not replace anything!
You should see a coffee cup in the systray, if you have Java, but Javascript is an entirely different beast. Try this: http://www.pages.org/javascript/
    for examples.

i have java and javascript installed. i uninstalled netscape. untill i get this resolved, i could care less about two browsers. anyway, i used to see the coffee cup in the sys tray, but not recently. the first page you suggested did not help at all - a little too advanced for me. anyway, the second page was interesting, but really didn't give me any hints into figuring out the problem. go to http://www.popcap.com. go to web games, and select anyone of them. a new window should open with javascript, not on my system. however, if i right click on the link, and say to open link in new window, ie says the page is not available, or to check my settings.

    wilcoxdj,

I went to the game site, and had no problems getting the game window, however, the site wanted to download ActiveX control, and I canceled out. I certainly don't want ActiveX on my machine.

What version of the Sun Java Plugin are you using with ME? Look here:
    Start | Settings | Control Panel | Java Plug-in
Click in the "About" tab and it will give you the Version there.

Also, click on the "Browser" tab. Is the plug-in enabled for Internet Explorer?

    wilcoxdj,

In the Java Control Panel, Advanced Tab, what have you selected there?
    "Use Java Plug-in default ", or "JRE 1.4.2 in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re142 "

For Netscape users I would suggest uninstalling the Sun Java plugin, 1.4.2, and try Version 1.4.1_04. You can download it here: Java 1.4.1_04 plugin

Some users who reported having problems with 1.4.2, and said that reverting to 1.4.1_04 was the solution for them. If you do decide to try this, uninstall 1.4.2 through Add/Remove. Be sure to reboot the PC before installing 1.4.1_04.
