I cannot display my history results for the previous sites visited. I can only display the present day's results. When I click History a icon that looks like a calendar is there with Today beside it. I have it set to show 21 days. I have cleared the files and cookies. I use Win 98SE and internet explorer 6, I ran Spybot and didn't have any virus, and ran ad-aware 6.0. I use AVG 6.0 Anti-virus. I searched for a solution to this problem but it came up with no results. What do I need to do? Thank you

Every now and then the OS or IE 'forgets' what settings you want. Try setting the days to zero and OK out. Close IE then reopen and set it back to what you want.

For fun, you could look for them in Windows Explorer (your file tree). You may not be able to restore them to IE (I don't know much about Win98, sorry) but you could probably recover any specific links you need, 'cause I bet they are all there!

Kasea --Following up on what Johanna has said, your History folder is in C:\Windows\History. While not a solution, at least it is a work around.

    History folder still doesn't work

C:\Windows\History opens a folder with a calendar icon with the word Today under it. When it opens it shows the current site I visited. I changed the days to keep history to 0 then closed and reopened and reset to 21 days but my history still just shows current days sites visited.

Kasea You'll probably have to wait until tomorrow to see if resetting it worked. You don't have any history to begin with that's older than today. Sorry, but if you didn't see previous days in windows explorer, it's just not there. After resetting your history, all you'll see in your history at this point is today. If however, resetting it worked, tomorrow should be a different story.

Zander is correct but on the chance things didn't get fixed, I'd give the following about a 95% chance of curing the problem completely. If not, the worst that will happen is that your PC will run faster and a bit better. Also we can troubleshoot from there on a known clean system. These things in this order please:
    • Set IE history to zero days.
    • Empty cookies and temporary internet files and then close IE.
    • Dump/delete all files/folders contained in your temp folder(s).
    • Delete any files in c:\ that have a name pattern of filennnn.chk where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, file0236.chk, etc. There may not be any.
    • Empty the recycle bin.
    • Reboot to DOS.
    • scanreg /fix and when it finishes
    • scanreg /opt and when it finishes
    • scandisk /surface /nosave /autofix
    • win /D:M (starts windows in safe mode)
    • scandisk standard and fix errors (a check for long filename issues since the DOS version doesn't understand or fix them)
    • defrag - and even if the things says it isn't needed, defrag anyway.
    • reboot
    • add/remove programs and click on IE. Use the repair option.
    • start IE and set history to the length you want it.

History can get corrupted when either the CMOS battery is interrupted for some reason, or the system is not set to the correct time/ date. (Is it possible you deleted your History by mistake?) Check in BIOS to make sure your comp knows the correct date and time. If you follow Newt's instructions, that should fix things up, and give you a smoother computer, as well.

Click Start - Shutdown - Restart in MS-DOS Mode. At the command prompt, type the following lines (hitting ENTER) after each line:-

    cd\windows
    smartdrv
    deltree history
    deltree tempor~1

    Type EXIT to restart Windows.

If you did as Brett said, you won't see anything but today because you've deleted the history folder and it contents (windows makes a new history folder automatically when you restart windows). So, you'll have to wait until tomorrow again to see if it worked. :(

Anybody beginning to wonder if repairing/reinstalling IE might do some good?

Kasea, wait to see if anyone else has input, but to repair IE, click start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information and then from the toolbar, tools>internet explorer repair tool. You will need to visit windows update when done.

Are you using McAfee Anti-virus? If so, there's a bug in the VShield "internet filter" that eliminates the history files.

According to the McAfee support forum, you can either disable the internet filter or download a patch. The link they gave is http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=761.

When I go to System Information under Tools I dont's have a Internet Explorer Repair Tool. The only repair tool I see is Windows Repair Tool.
