I have an IBM ThinkPad running Windows 2000. Recently, the PC is booting up slowly, sometimes up to 30 minutes to load programs. When I ran PC Diagnostics, it shows Fail.. CMOS PatternTest.. error code.

I was wondering what this means and could this be the reason for the computer to run slow? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Roger

    Which Thinkpad?

Is the diagnostic test one that came with the laptop?

Were there any code numbers listed with the failure?

CMOS is more of a hardware issue than OS so moving this to the hardware section from 2K.

ThinkPad T-23 and yes the diagnostic test was PC doctor previously loaded on laptop. No error #'s just said "error code" but listed no #.

    Thanks.

    Hi Roger,

You (we) need to know at what stage it is getting "stuck ". If it has an IBM or Windows splash screen press the Esc key. If it has not started Windows, then it will be a problem with the BIOS/CMOS (identifying hardware?).

Here is the IBM support page:Thinkpad T-23 . Try Troubleshooting > Startup. Let us know if you can narrow the cause down to a particular "stage ".

CMOS pattern test-> Go to Search PC Support.Type in "CMOS pattern test ", look through those related to Thinkpads (if it says there are no results click the "clear form" button and try again). As you will see, there are a lot of possible causes. Let's hope it is a simple one.(Edit: Maybe not a lot of causes  , looks like "Check BIOS setting" (reset defaults?), "Backup battery" (looks as though it should show other faults as well), "System Board "
(motherboard problem, although this may just mean a loose connection).

    Matt
