    Hello,
I am VERY novice in the VPN area of computing. However, I would like to try to master it.

I have set up a VPN server on our Win2k DC, so people can access the network at home.

The issue is, once they connect to my VPN server, their internet access "vanishes ". By that, they can transfer files to and from the server, however, they cannot open websites, etc, and chat programs/MSN cease to work until they disconnect from the VPN Server.

This is rather frustrating, as it cannot be a serious disconnection as I can still remotely control their PC through VNC.

Help would be most strongly appreciated. :)

Are they trying to do internet/chat/whatever via the network and their VPN connection?

Possibly, but I don't want them to. All I want is for them to be able to access their files/home folder while using their own internet connection for that, and everything else.

I could be wrong here but if they only have one NIC (or modem if they dial in), I think it might depend on their settings and maybe on the features their router has.

Take a look Here for a settings gotcha.

If I'm wrong here PLEASE correct me :) if the people at home use their internet connection (either dial up or NIC) they probably only have one or the other..... and a VPN connection is established. It becomes a "point to point" connection, as in they are connected "virtually" to work server only (Y/N) ? They would not be able to surf the net using that connection, until they break the VPN connection (Y/N)? Thanks.

Dial-up and I don't think there is any question you are correct.

Broadband with a router - I went searching because my first thought was the same as yours but I also wasn't really, completely, totally positive. I'm still not.

Take a look at the very bottom of the link I posted above.

My only dealings with VPN is when I take my work laptop home and have to connect back to the office. I still have internet and all of that but via the office network. I can tell because the firewall here (I'm at work now) blocks some very strange internet sites and does it with a very distinctive message.

There may be some way around it though - I just can't play around with any testing right now since I'm wired to the work net.

    Hello,
So it is not possible to have someone connected to the internet, and use it as their own connection, AND be connected to my VPN Server?

    (Edit)
I will try out what it states on the bottom of that link, just in case :)

The last part of Newt's posted link is likely the key

However I'm not 100% certain either :) As my VPN is using a third party and not the inbuilt MS one (MS / Security - know what I mean !)
