got a PC and installed a firewire card. no drivers came with the card, after i installed the card windows detected it but did not find drivers to install it.

i called the maker of the card and they didn't make any drivers for their cards, they said that the OS manufacturer is sopost to supply the drivers.

i called Microsoft and they wanted $$$ to answer my question.

    any advice

Windows XP has support for firewire without additional drivers - except for special requirements.

Using IEEE 1394 (FireWire) Devices with Windows XP

Is the card shown in Device Manager? Are any drivers listed? - Windows often installs the drivers 'silently' for cards like this. I assume that the card is not working.

Have you tried to force a manual install of the drivers via Device Manager > IEEE 1394 Bus host Controllers > Update Driver > Install from a specific location and point it to the XP install CD?

You could try removing the card through Device Manager and rebooting to let Windows find it again.

Also check that the card is properly seated and try it in another slot.

i installed the card on my machine and it worked like it was sopost to.

i attached another hard drive to the computer and loaded xp home and then installed the firewire card and then it worked like it was sopost to.

so their is something in windows that is not installing this card, as of right now backupdata and reload windows. got a better solution? i bet microsoft would suggest that also, ill call them in a bit.

I'm a little confused here - if I understand your post correctly the card is working - so what exactly is the problem?

    Much better :D

Unlikely to be XP, but it might be worth running System File Checker on machine 2.

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP install CD handy.

Could be a hardware problem - does the mobo in machine 2 support firewire I wonder.

found out what it was after all with out having to erase any data.

i ran sfc /scannow still didnt get any windows drivers to install
    then
i scaned the disk for errors, start > my computer > c: > tools > Error Checking

it found several hundred errors or something fixed them all,, rebooted and then searched for the drivers and it found them and installed it.

good deal, ty for help ;)

I would take notice of that - the drive may well be on it's way out.
