My XP Home system has suddenly lost the ability to respond to the Logitech Mouse middle wheel button for double clicking Icons on the Desktop if no
other apps are active on the desktop. As soon as I start another program and
have it's window on the desktop, the wheel double clicking function returns.

I can open any Icon on a clean desktop by double clicking the regular way by clicking the left mouse button twice. Also, the wheel double click works reliably everywhere else to open items or Explorer folders etc.

The problem may have started after I removed the demo version of ACDSee.

    Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like a software option for assigning or customizing the action of the mouse wheel. Do you have such software? Does the mouse icon in control panel offer customization of your logitech mouse?

I think Logitech puts their software right into the Control Panel under "Mouse ". If not, there should be in entry on the Start > All Programs Check all the settings for the buttons and wheel, and maybe uninstall/reboot/reinstall the software.

I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling if you haven't done that already.

I've had similar problems with my Logitech wheel mouse. Go to control panel-mouse properties and change the settings for the wheel (or smart move), use the mouse feature, then go back and restore the setting(s) you want.

I have no idea what causes the problem, but this workaround has always fixed my mouse problems.

Yes I've had that too. Even a reboot sometimes will fix it. Nevertheless a reinstall works (almost) permanently.
