Hi people - I'm having trouble with my USR 5686D external modem. It will not connect. I was using this modem with great satisfaction for a long while when I stayed online one night with a good line of t'storms passing but since all lightening was cloud to cloud I thought it safe to stay on line. Maybe not. Next morning no connection.
My question is: Is there any way to test/check an external modem for damage? I've done a lot of checking and searching and get hints of maybe damaged modem here and there. I've done the driver thing and the .INF file thing and all others that I can think of and still can't get it to connect. It communicates in Control Panel Modems diagnostics but that is it. Thanks in advanced for advice.

If you have the sound enabled on the modem, and when it dials, do you hear a dial tone or dialing? If not, the dialer is dead.
The computer may communicate with it fine, but the dialer can be dead.

As far as I know Mark, I have sound enabled and it doesn't dial. Or no dialing sounds. I assume that means a damaged modem?

    Hi Bobmc32,

Had a lot of trouble with my brother's modem, I think it got lightning strike (after more than a year of good service). It would run through everything except handshake with the ISP's server. I set it up on two other computers, same result. It had an unconditional warranty so after the tech checked all of the settings with me on the phone, I was able to return it. The replacement modem was connected to the Net in about 15 minutes. So I think it could cause some strange effects.

Looks like you aren't receiving any error messages?

Try setting it up on another computer (and phone line) if you can, that should rule out drivers and a lot of other possible faults.

    Matt

Matt & Mark - I bought mine from another fellow and think I read warrenties are only good for the first party. Latest error message is "Error 629. You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. "
I looked at the modem log from last evening and won't post it all as it seems normal up to this point..........From log:
    05-25-2004 19:44:13.38 - Dialing.
    05-25-2004 19:44:13.38 - Send: ATDT##########<cr>
    05-25-2004 19:44:14.47 - Recv: <cr><lf>NO DIAL TONE<cr><lf>
    05-25-2004 19:44:14.47 - WARNING: Unrecognized response. Retrying...
    05-25-2004 19:44:17.06 - Hanging up the modem.
    05-25-2004 19:44:17.06 - Session Statistics:
    05-25-2004 19:44:17.06 - Reads : 34 bytes
    05-25-2004 19:44:17.06 - Writes: 74 bytes
    05-25-2004 19:44:17.06 - U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT closed

No dial tone! I haven't called USR as yet. Oh yes, the USR Control Center can't find it either. Thanks for comments and ideas so far.

I believe it is dead. I would recommend a serial port external modem.
Uninstall the modem drivers, if possible, before shutting down and disconnecting or removing the old modem.

Mark - Also my conclusion. I ran an app called Net Optimizer which has a modem check in it and it gave error as "no dial tone" also. It's conclusion was possible damage due to lightening overvoltage which is the logical conclusion due to the circumstances. Ratz! I had grown fond of it. Currently using elcheapo Diamond Supra modem which is hesitant to connect much over 24,000. Sometimes a bit more but not often. :( Thanks guys, as usual. Appreciated.
