I haev an old video card (the 400x600 kind). Took video card out of old PC that has a more updated card (600x800 kind). Problem is, my old card is attached to teh motherboard while the card I want to use is a "slotted" card. I have a slot spot for the card, but want to disable the old card from the board.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Wow! that must be an old PC :D

Long shot, but have you looked in the BIOS for means to disable the 'onboard' card? Unlikely I guess, but worth a try.

Other suggestion is to see if both cards will cohabit without conflicting - don't recall if it was 98 or 98SE which allowed you to run two video cards - for two monitors.

    Moving this to Hardware

Very high probabilty there will be a jumper on the MoBo for disabling on-board video - where is it? - now, thats another matter. You're going to have to research a manual or get a good magnifying glass and a flashlight and pray like hell that its marked with more than just a jumper #.
    ;)

W98 first edition already has support for multiple VDUs.

If you can physically install the card into the motherboard, and the additional card is somehow enabled by the mobo, then:

    0) Identify the "new" card on the computer going to be the organ donor, either from scribblings on the card itself or from (if you have Win98 on that one), Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> System -> Device Manager, look for the adapter, make a note of it

    1) On the PC that will receive the donated organ, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> System -> Device Manager, look for the current adapter to be disabled, make a note of it

    2) go to the Hardware Profiles tab, copy current config, save it under a new name, select new config, reboot

    2) click on the adapter's properties, go to the "exists in all hardware profiles" check and uncheck it, save, shutdown

    3) remove power cord, install "new" card, reboot

    4) If it's a plug and play card, it should be recognized and added, if not you may have to do so manually (the card's model will come in handy then...). You should be able to see smtg anyway if Win98 activates some ugly defalt 640 pixel driver.

    Let us know the result.
