My friend has purchased a BOSS BR-864 8Track recorder (I will post model later). Amazingly for a product of this price it does not come with it's own drivers (USB) but it says that when you connect to the PC it will auto detect. Well my friend has XP Pro with SP1 and (according to Windows Update) no more driver updates are available. The computer can see the device but does not find any drivers for it. The USB does work as I tried it with my MP3 player, although it required me to install drivers from the disk for that.
The 8Track works on another PC with XP, so what is wrong? Is it possible to have missing drivers and if so what do I do?
Will re-installing XP help? If so is it OK to install over SP1 install?

First port of call is the manufacturer's web site - Windows Update only lists those drivers MS have approved - this costs the manufacturer and is a slow process, so most don't bother.

Does Device Manager indicate a problem with an exclamation mark or similar?

Did any software come with this device?

Are you using a USB port or a hub - some devices don't like hubs, powered or unpowered.

Try another USB port. It's always possible that there is a hardware conflict - some USR modems will not work with Via chipsets, for example, but I guess that's unlikely.

I have edited your thread title - helps to be specific and am moving the thread to Hardware.

    Thanks Pete:

Manufacturers website was first port of call but offers no help or drivers, it is quite poor tbh.
Device manager shows the device as a device with no driver.
The Hardware came with no software at all.
I tried both USBs (which work with other things).

That is why I think that this is maybe an XP/Driver issue rather than hardware??

Had a look at the Boss websites (US & Japan) - that's an impressive bit of kit!

The brochure clearly states that the required drivers are loaded by the OS.

As far as I can see - as far as the PC is concerned it is a card reader for the CF card.

Conected my card reader with CF card to my XP Pro m/c - in DeviceManager the drivers are ......

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\disk.sys
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\PartMgr.sys

Can you check this on the other PC on which the device works? Did you use the same USB cable on both m/c's?

On your friend's PC see if those drivers are in the location shown - I am assuming that the same drivers would be loaded on the PC on which it works as are on mine.

When the device is connected to either computer do you get the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the notification area (btm right by the clock)?

It may be worth running System File Checker on your friend's PC ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have the XP install CD handy.

OK I have checked my friend's PC and he has these files:
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\disk.sys
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\PartMgr.sys

I also tried replacing them with my copies - no joy!.

I did file checker and Windows didn't do anything, just ran the checker to the end, so I assume it found no missing files - still no joy!

Another friend then tried to replace all USB related drivers and now it's even worse, there are three unknown driverless entries under an unknown device in Device Manager. The only thing I can think of now is re-install Windows!!??
Will that help - or is the motherboard broken? This install of WindowsXP works fine, except for the fact that you can't restart without a bluescreen of death, you have to shutdown then start....

Doesn't sound 'fine' to me :( - what is the error mesage on the BSOD? More information will be available in Event Viewer - you might like to post the error details here.

Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application. You are looking for error messages on the restart flagged in red. Double click on the error message to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy - paste here.

In the meantime in Device Manager remove the unknown driverless entries you mention and reboot.

Check that you have the USB 1.1 & 2 patch from Microsoft - it does not appear to address your problem, but maybe?
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822603

    and maybe look here too.

At this stage you might try removing all the USB controllers and rebooting to let Windows find them again as Matt implies

If all this fails to resolve the immediate problem Repair of XP - Back up all data, etc FIRST

I doubt very much that there is a problem with the motherboard.

If it happens to be a motherboard with a VIA chipset, get their USB controller drivers here:
    http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
    (under peripherals)
    Other chipset, check their website.
