    Recheck pic.

    shadowhawk,

Checked your pic again, and there are 2 cables (from 2 usb ports) leading to a large square object, from which 2 sets of wires exit and lead to 2 black plugs, one for each port. Are the "plugs" made up of individual 1-wire connections? or are they solid plugs, each with 4 wires? It sounds to me like you're describing the first. True?

If they're just solid plugs, just orient each so power (red, i think) goes to power and plug them in.

If they're each four individual plugs each attached to an individual wire, you must plug each separately onto the correct pin.

Here's a picture of my board's USB connector from my manual. Can you tell me exactly which holes the individual connectors go to? Sorry if I seem dense at this stuff. :(

    wow!

Aha! That's non-standard. we'll have to be careful!

What colors are the 4 wires going to one set of black connectors? one black connector?
The 4 wires coming out of one edge of the large square? (same question, asked 3 ways to gain clarity, I hope) They should belong to one usb port.

    Thoughts while waiting for answers

The pins appear to alternate as follows:

    Left Right
    1 2
    3 4
    5 6
    7 8
    9
    Verify with mobo manual.

The only wires now of importance are those for data.

    D2+ to pin 3
    D2- to pin 4
    and
    D3+ to pin 7
    D3- to pin 8

Power connections are interchangeable with each other on pins 5 and 6.

Ground connections are interchangeable on pins 1, 2, and 9. Actually only one ground connection for each usb is necessary, and pin 9 is available only if an extra grnd wire is supplied.

The challenge is to identify the data lines because D1+ and D1- from a usb port must be kept together; you mustn't have D1+ from one port working with D2+ (or D2-) from a different port.

It appears that only the gray wire goes in with the 2 black ones. Perhaps it'd be easier to just get another cable, one that'll work properly with my mainboard's connector.

    Finally see what you've said!

stupid me!! I finally found I can enlarge your picture of the cable ends! Now I see what you mean. Yes, you'll have to use the individual connectors. And go by the color codes in the case manual, and the socket label in the mobo manual. make sure you match d2 with d2, and d3 with d3 according to the socket diagram. Sorry to be so dull.

Yeah, but I don't know which connectors to put in which hole. The labels on the connectors don't match the labels in my manual. Ugh, hardware's just not my thing.

    Identify each wire.

There should be a list of color codes in the info that came with you box. If you don't have that, we're stuck. It's essential to identify what each wire does.

You may have to contact the dealer or manufacturer to find out what the colors mean. It's too dangerous to guess. The worst thing that can happen is place a ground wire where a power wire should be; that would cause a short which could blow the mobo or psu.

    I didn't know
were there. Please list the labels and maybe I can still help.

I got this off another website. Tell me what you think:

Do not plug anything into the 2 SGND connectors (I can't anyway because there are only 7 individual connectors and are 9 plugs).

Plug green into SBD2+, orange into SBD2-, black into SVCC1, coffee to the other SVCC1, yellow to SBD3+, red to SBD3- and gray to GND.

That actually makes sense. What do you think?

Dangerous to assume that applies to your box. Historically, red=power, blk=grnd. Best to get info that you're sure applies to YOUR box.
Are there labels on the individual, separate connectors on the usb cables?

Yes, on the individual cables, coffee and black are power. Red is USB1-.

Not the end of the world.

    You're right, it sounds plausable.

I'd try it if I didn't mind living dangerously and could afford to fix anything I might break (worst case = psu and/or mobo). I've certainly done that, and I can't recall breaking anything.

If I wanted to be cautious, I'd go for the info from the manufacturer; there's no emergency, and you can always open the case later and plug in the front usb cables when your sure you have correct info.

    It's now your call.

I don't know who manufactured the stupid case. Shouldn't I be OK as long as I don't hook a power connector up to a ground and vice versa? I won't do anything that stupid. If the USB ones get connected wrong, I'd just get some kind of error message, right?

    Go for it!

Right. Test the port with something inexpensive like a 32mg flash card first before hooking up your camera. :D

I could test it with an MP3 player I'm about to return for a replacement. :D

    What's this?

Anything that works is fine. I'd use the flash memory because it's got lots of functions to test, like copy, erase, format, etc.

    Any luck?

    shadowhawk,

Are you ok? Please bring us up to date.

Actually, not worried about you working inside case, 'cause there's no danger of shock unless you get inside psu. Just wondering if you had stroke or something due to my dumb help? Looking back over your posts, in the one re: picture of cable, you did mention the sheet which came with box and had color codes from manufacturer, and I completely missed the information because of misinterpreting the pic from it's thumbnail.

I haven't done anything yet. I'm waiting for a new floppy cable to come and will then go inside the beast and do what must be done. I'm rehearsing how to hook it up in my head so I don't make a stupid mistake when it comes.
