Reason why i am asking is when i put any cd in my dvd rw it doesn't notice it and i know awhile back i did this once before were i would change the drive letter to match it for my dvd rw... Its usually on D: but i know once it was something like F and i had to change it to D... Does anyone know how to do this ... Thanks

First check in Admin tools from the start menu. Computer management, then disk management. From here you can check the assigned letter and change by right clicking etc.

    Next step.

    QuickStart,

If Paul's suggestion doesn't solve the problem, do WindowsKey+e to open explorer and see if cd shows there. If it doesn't, in the left window (in classic mode!) scroll down and open control panel and then open system > hardware > device manager and look at cd dvd drives and see if yours is shown. If not, try reinstalling drivers that came with it.

If it's shown in explorer, do file > properties and open the autoplay tab and select what you wish.

Pleaase keep us informed of your progress.

Paul >>> Your post there is what i did to change the drive letter and afterward i was having the problems with DVD_RW rom were it wouldn't work right , So i made a post about it and someone suggested to go somewhere in the registry for my dvd rw rom look at the vakue letter to see whether it matches with the letter that i change in the disk management area ... Well there was my problem in the registry value it wasn't the same , So this same person whom suggested to view my registry told me how to change the value and i can't seem to remember what that person told me ... So if someone could tell me where to view the value letter for my dvd rw rom drive under the registry i could fix my problem ... Thanks

CDROM lettering is done in the BIOS ( or at least the boot up sequence )before Windows even gets started.

It is asigned a letter just above the last harddrive letter. If you have more than one CDROM that can effect lettering.

The above tells me that you had HD partitions C: D: and E: There must have been a reason for it being F:

You can change the CDROM to any letter above the HD partitions but not below.

Double Click on My Computer Icon and lets us know what shows there.

Look in both HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\Shares and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\Lanmanserver\Shares. You should find the current letter designation for your drive.

My BIOS doesn't know ANYthing about drive letters, BillyBob. Are you sure you're you're not thinking about Windows installation or repair, where you're booting from a 98 floppy or an XP CD?

I may be wrong about the BIOS. But they are set accorcing to the HD lettering. And yes I agree. I could have been thinking about something different.

I was checking around in XP Pro last evening and found NO PLACE to change CDROM lettering. In 98 it could be done in the Device manager. I have the CDROMS set as S: & T: in 98SE. But I have as yet not found how to do the in XP.

But my main question is " Why was it seen to be set as F: ? " Drive ( partition ) C: D: E: = CDROM as F:

QuickStart asked specifically where it was found in the registry.

It's done in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc). My CDROM drive is set as R: (Read), and my CD/DVD-RW drive as W: (Write).

I do not find it there in the area pointed to either. Also I only have Controlset(s)001 & 002.

AHHH !! 1st question. - Is it possible that the CDROM does not show up in the area pointed to because it is not SHARED ?

2nd question.- Is it possible the Lanmanserver is assiciated with the Local Area Network ?

    JSS3rd

Thanks for the info on DiskManagement.
