My new case came with a front USB connector. It looked like it'd fit with the one on my board, but the dead pin is in exactly the wrong place. I made a jpeg to show what I'm talking about. Is the cord made wrong?

The one on the left is how my mainboard's front USB connector is, and the one on the right is how the cable that came with the case is.

    Check color codes!

    shadowhawk,

    from: here
Standard USB Cable Wiring Color Code:
    5V / Red
    D+ / Green
    D - / White
    Ground / Black

    Color code is safest criterion.

Check this against your manual. Left pic has pin 1 marked. Don't know what right pic shows, but if cable, it looks like a fit.

I haven't seen a cable that didn't work in the last few years, but before then, wow! lots.

I don't know how to take a cable apart and move the wires around in it. I'm not good with stuff like that. I'm more, "the wire's there and fits properly" and just put it in type.

Seems to me the case makers should've made the cable properly in the first place.

    Don't give up!

Look at end of cable at the connector and see if you can see the colors where they exit from the outer cover to reach the plug. You should be able to pull back the outer cover a little without damaging anything.

Otherwise check the manual that came with the tower case to see if the pins are identified.

I can't believe they'd leave you in the dark!

Here's a picture of the cable I just took. This is the end that connects to the mainboard. Written on the paper are: Coffee: USB PWR, Black: USB PWR, Orange: USB 0-, Green: USB 0+, Red: USB 1-, Yellow: USB 1+, Gray: Ground

    In my mainboard's manual, it's Pin 1: SGND1, Pin 2: SGND1, Pin 3: SBD2+, Pin 4: SBD2-, Pin 5: SVCC1, Pin 6: SVCC1, Pin 7: SBD3+, Pin 8: SBD3-, Pin 9: GRND

    shadowhawk,

I think so too, and personally, if it were mine, I'd take the chance.

    Keep pluggin' along.

    shadowhawk,

    Just saw the pic; excellent!

You are describing two usb ports, right?

If so, black and orange correspond to two red, one for each connection.
The pic in previous post is for two usb connections, one on each side of the connector.

    The other colors should correspond.

The main thing is that the ground and power are correct, because if they are you won't damage the mobo. You'll have to do the checking there, but, as in my prev. post, I think you are pretty safe to connect if you are sure of the power and ground, one of each on each side of the connection.

If I can't get the squarred-off one to go in, can I use those little individual ones instead? The ones that have the paper wrapped around them?

    careful!

    shadowhawk,

Actually, the two little black plugs go to the mobo, one on each side of the socket.
There are 5 openings in the socket on each side, but you only need the first 4. I suspect the red on each plug is power, so be careful.

OK if the gray one is ground, it'll go on the side where the one plug is missing, right? And the 2 that are for power will go on the opposite side?

    shadowhawk,

    Corresponding to my first post:

    In my mainboard's manual, it's
    Pin 1: SGND1,
    Pin 2: SGND1,
    Pin 3: SBD2+, This= Green
    Pin 4: SBD2-, This= White
    Pin 5: SVCC1, This= POWER

    Pin 6: SVCC1, This= POWER
    Pin 7: SBD3+, This= Green
    Pin 8: SBD3-, This= White
    Pin 9: GRND

You don't need but one grnd on each side.

Thanks for your patience with me. The cable says that coffee and black are both power. Does it matter if I hook the coffee-colored one to pin 5 and the black one to pin 6, or vice versa? Again, thanks for being patient with me.

    shadowhawk,

No. You're making two connections for two usb ports (one on each side of the 10 pin mobo socket) and each (side) needs a power and ground. thereare 5 sockets on each side, but only 4 (on each side) are used. If you have an extra ground you can plug it in to any ground connection.

    shadowhawk,

No. Power is power. Ground is ground. But both D+ and D- on the same side should not be switched to the other side (must remain on the same side) - they are the data lines.

    shadowhawk,

The cable says that coffee and black are both power.

Are you sure??? Red should be power, normally.

    shadowhawk,

This is how I think it should look ( assuming red = power):

Pin 1: SGND1, GRND ( if an extra grnd)
    Pin 2: SGND1, GRND
    Pin 3: SBD2+, This= Green
Pin 4: SBD2-, This= White (make sure this and the above come from same side)
    Pin 5: SVCC1, This= POWER (red)

    Pin 6: SVCC1, This= POWER (red)
    Pin 7: SBD3+, This= Green
    Pin 8: SBD3-, This= White
    Pin 9: GRND
