I've got alot of difficulty transferring digital photos from my camera to computer.

Every time I try to transfer digital photos the computer hangs then reboots.
I've got a SanDisk card reader version 2.0 as well as a Fuji FinePix version 1.1 and neither seem to work. The USB ports on the motherboard and both ports on my PCI card won't work with either card reader.

According to Microsoft, USB ports may not work if you have an AMD processor (350 or higher) and a VIA Tech USB - and I have both. I've downloaded their so called patch but it still doesn't work.

I can transfer 3 maybe 4 photos before the computer does down. The techs where I bought the computer keep telling me its the card reader so I bought the Fuji (which is the same version as my PCI card) and it still doesn't work.

This is really getting on my nerves.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated??

    Hi Stu,
Are you connecting the camera directly to the USB port with a cable or taking the flash card out of the camera and inserting into a card reader connected to
    a USB port ?
If the former, I suspect the camera battery is weak and Windows loses
the connection after a short while.
The second method I mention above, of course, does not stress the camera
battery at all. The flash card readers are cheap and very easy to use as
they appear as a Removeable Disk on your PC that can be explored,
    copied, formatted etc.
    regards

No, I'm using card readers - I've tried both the SanDisk Imagemate 2.0 and the Fuji FinePix 1.1.

I did however, run my printer through the USB port this morning and it ran with no problems at all.

I did also notice that when the computer reboots (or tries to at least) if the card reader is still plugged in, the computer will not successfully reboot.

I also noticed that I've got about 5 or 6 devices on IRQ 5. How many devices can you have on one IRQ without causing conflicts?

Could this be the cause of my problem?

Hi again Stu, Can you see the card in Windows Explorer/My Computer and
view all the images on it. Have you tried a different card ?

Stu, I too had a problem with an AMD/VIA USB setup, where some devices worked some did not. After LOTS of research and updates, VIA finally posted that there was a problem with their chipset used in combination with a Soundblaster card, once I changed the sound card to a Turtle Beach, all my USB problems went away. Suggest that you make sure you have the latest VIA drivers as well (Important). If you update the VIA drivers you may want to uninstall/re-install your reader drivers as well.
What make/model motherboard are you using?

    Thanks TJ-IT for the info.

A lot of people didn't believe me about the AMD/VIA USB setup and it's nice to see that someone else knows about it and has had the same problems I had.

I think my problems are (hopefully?) now over. I've had XP installed and so far no problems.

PS - My motherboard is an ASUS A7V 133 ...

    Stu,

There are other known problems too with that combination -I ran that Asus board until recently and a United Robotics USB modem failed to work - Via chipset problem known to, but not readily acknowlrdged by, United Robotics. And that was on XP :)

    You are not alone :D
