I just got a new desktop and have 3 GB of emails saved in my Netscape Mail Local Folders that I desperately need to have access to on my new computer. How can I transfer them to the local folders on my new computer? I could technically reduce the amount of emails to under a GB (to fit onto one CD) if that is necessary.

    Welcome to the Forum hada19!

    Hi hada19,

Wow, that is a huge accumulation of messages. Before burning the messages to CD, first open Netscape Mail & Newsgroups. Empty the Trash Folder, and Compact all folders.

I would zip the Local Folder directory before burning to CD, in order to avoid the conversion of file attributes to "Read Only ". Once you have the Local Folders burned to CD, then copy the Folder from the CD to the new PC.

    Next:
Assuming Netscape 7 is installed on the new PC, and the OS is Windows XP:
    Close Netscape and Quick Launch
    Open Windows Explorer
Rename the existing Local Folder directory to XLocal Folders. Now Unzip the Local Folder directory to the Mail Folder.
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

If you are moving these messages from a different OS, than the new PC, then it will also be necessary to change the Local Folder path, from the old to the new OS:

Open the Netscape prefs.js file in a text editor with Find/Replace.
In the text editor, type in the Profile path of the old PC
When found, replace the Profile path with the Profile path of the new PC, e.g.,

    FROM:
    C:\Windows/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/profilename/xxxxxxxx.slt
    TO:
    C:\Documents and Settings/XPusername/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/profilename/xxxxxxxx.slt

Post back if you have further questions, or if you encounter problems.

    hada19,

I simply must, in good conscience, add a caution as to the amount of email you have accumulated. You are at high risk of losing it all, with files of that size. You should seriously consider archiving that Mail, either to CD, or to another drive.

If you archive the Mail to CD you will still be able to access, send, and edit your messages. You will not, however, be able to receive messages. See this page: Archive & Access Netscape Mail from CD

To archive to another drive, see this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=30597
