I'm planning to do a clean install. Do I have to
uninstall my Win98 SE? Must I back up any specific
files? Or would an upgrade be easier?

    Hi joeskys,
You've got me a titch confused. You say you're planning a clean install, which should mean you're planning on wiping out your drive with maybe an fdisk and format? If that's the case.....that would most certainly take care of not having to uninstall 98. As for back ups....you've most certainly got to make copies of any data you want to keep. Perhaps favourites and address book for starters? As well as any documents etc you have saved?
Just from personal experience, I much prefer to go the route of a clean install, rather than an upgrade. But again, that's just me. An upgrade should work well for you too.
If you're going to upgrade, I'd still make back ups just for my own security.......but your personal preferences, documents etc won't be lost.

Daizy: I don't mean format or fdisk. I was referring to either unstalling 98 and then installing XP or just installing XP over 98
as an upgrade, if that makes sense! or
putting a new install of XP as a 2nd OS.
    Thanks for your reply

    Hi again joeskys
That makes perfect sense now. Then it's not a clean install you want, if you're not going to be wiping out your hard drive. It's an upgrade. In which case, by all means, just put it right ontop of 98. Uninstalling would just cause more headaches than would be worth it. Again, just my opinion. You may want to wait to see if others steer you differently.

    WOW! That was quick.:)
If I install over 98, will my user files etc. be
kept in tact? Any problems I should be aware of?
Thanks again for the reply, Joe

    Hi again joeskys
    By user files you mean?
Is this your first upgrade? The best I can aliken it to, is like going to windows updates. You'll see small differences, but your settings remain the same. You're going to see a major dfference in appearance between 98 and XP however. But always play it safe, and back up...back up..back up. :)
Here's a little reassurance reading for you.
