Hi all: This is just a minor annoyance, but it is an annoyance. After installing a new program or changing what starts on boot, instead of the normal splash screen with progress bar, I get a motteled green screen that resolves into vertical black and white lines then to all white. Then I get the "loading your personal settings" screen and Windows boots normally. Boot times are also normal.

Since this only happens with some change in the system, IE: add or delete a program from start up, or, install a new program, I can live with it, but I'd rather not if the cure is not too complex, complicated and/or overly risky.

    Any replies will be appreciated.

Hi Martin - you certainly find 'em :D

First thought, as always, is video drivers. I had a vaguely similar problem - although not allied to system changes, with the latest release of the drivers for my Matrox G550 card. Installing the previous driver solved the problem.

Hi Pete, thanks for the response.

Yeah, I'm getting to be the expert on finding strange nonsense like this.

I'm not surprised by your potential fix. Let me tell you about my video drivers. I have the Sapphire (mfg) ATI Radeon 9800 PRO. Get the latest driver from their site (Sapphire's), published by ATI, install them and crash the machine. Roll back drivers to original that came on CD, all is well except this. Any other ideas? Registry settings?

Is it worth trying a download direct from ATI?

No Pete, I did that, same results. On reboot after new drivers, get Windows with res of about 400X200 @16 colors. Roll back fixes.

Sounds like your splash screen is damaged. Wonder if sfc would replace it? Worth a try?

I begin to wonder if just changing the PC name would clear up some of your issues.

    ;) :D

Aw, c'mon Newt, gimme a break! You taking up where Johanna left off or she's out of town and you're subbing for her??? :p

Sparrow: Thanks for the suggestion. That might work, but I always worry about SFC wiping out updates. And not knowing which ones are gone.

Newt, remember the discussion on this where you answered that question with a "yes, no, maybe "

    Anything new?

    Hi Martin,

I had problems with an ATI driver upgrade last fall. It caused all kinds of strange video glitches even after rollback. On a whim I ran a registry cleaner to remove any orphaned keys with bad info from the driver install. Cured the video problems. Worth a try. HTH.

Hi Bill, Good suggestion, I tried it again, I use Regseeker which is about a powerful reg cleaner as there is. No Help.

I previously had a Radeon All-In-Wonder card in this machine (and various other cards) which got broken. (won't go into how) Ever since I installed this 9800, I have been getting errors in event viewer system, machine trying to load features from old All-in-Wonder card. I have no idea on how to get rid of those errors, and I was advised on this bbs, pretty much to live with it and ignore them.

I don't know if those errors are contributing to this strange behavior.

Here is one of those errors, there are three more.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7000
    Date: 5/21/2004
    Time: 6:59:35 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: CATASTROPHY
    Description:
The ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I guess it is possible that these errors are part of the problem. But before installing this card, I had removed the old card through device manager but not the drivers, I don't know how.

Can I remove all ATI drivers and start over clean? If so, how?

I'm leaving town today for daughter's soccer tournament, will return Monday.

    Thanks for all help.

Hmmm, I was wondering why the dishwasher was acting so strangely!

Thanks Johanna, I did the no gui, not sure I like it that way, kind of miss the splash screen. :(

Would like to find some other solution, not such a big deal though, I can live with the once in a while green screen.

    Edit:Leaving at noon today.

Yep, Catastrophy is waiting for your car to pull out so that she can order a truckload of paper plates. Your family will be drinking out of Dixie cups when you get home!

I want to caution you about the XP Splash Screen. Do not look at the moving bar. There are subliminal messages in that bar that encourage you to throw piles of money at MS and their "partners ". People have had to seek psychiatric counseling and take hallucinogenic drugs to recover from the damage caused by staring at the "pretty bar" while rebooting, AGAIN. Think about it- what better captive audience than a person with an XP misfortune? What thoughts run through your mind while that bar flashes?
(my favorite: "Will I ever see my Desktop again? ") Beware the splash bar. Look away. Look away.

Oh, and those charges on your Visa were from the Washing Machine, who got his feelings hurt when Catastrophy started seeing the Dishwasher, so he went shopping. He decided that if he was going to get the "cold shoulder ", he'd date a freezer. He went online and found one, but she refused to move to Georgia without accessories. And, BTW, your pick up truck caught on to the plan, and threatened to tell you, so Catastrophy made some more charges- Hush Money. You wondered where the new mud flaps and gun rack came from, didn't you?

    Johanna :D

Sorry Johanna, been out of town at daughter's soccer tournament, just got an opportunity to read your post.

My, You certainly were feeling creative!

While we were away, the dishwasher and Catastrophy mated, now all are dishes are coming out printed with a 404 error message. It's ok though, apparently the dishwasher is using injet ink and you can just run water over them, it washes right off.
