I need to purchase an external hard drive and would like to know what your experience has concluded is the best brand to buy. I have searched the forums but this does not seem to have been discussed recently.

This week Staples has a Maxtor 120GB external drive for $149.94. I can get a $30.00 discount on that, which makes it cost me just under $130.00 with tax included. They also have an internal Maxtor 160GB for $89.94.

Can I buy the internal drive and put it in an external box and have what I want. I do not need the backup software that comes with the external as I will be using Ghost to write backups to this drive. I am not familiar with putting a drive in the external box. Will it be as good as the readymade external drive?

Can I put a second hard drive in the case of my computer?

    Thanks

    Daniel

After much research on Google I bought a Maxtor One Touch USB2 120 Gb a couple of weeks ago to back up the entire computer 'independently'. The back up software was an incentive and works well. I use Ghost to make an image of the OS partition on the Maxtor and the back up software, Dantz to back up the remainder of my drives (2 hard drives partitioned C thro' O).

You could put an external drive into a custom case, but they are not cheap and probably not as good and the Maxtor was better value IMO.

Simple enough to add a second hard drive providing you have a spare EIDE connection. You are limited to 4 EIDE devices - 2 per controller, so if you currently have a single hard drive and no more than 2 optical drives (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM etc) the answer is 'Yes'.

    Hi Daniel...

I'm with PeteC...I'm running the 40 GB and the 80 GB Maxtor 3000LE USB models and they work great. The 120 GB sounds like a pretty good deal.

    Thanks for the replies

I just purchased the 160GB internal hard drive from Staples and will put it in my computer case. After talking to a knowledgeable tech about installation, it appears to be very simple.

    Thanks again

    Daniel

Just to let you know the outcome of this installation.

I discovered that my computer case had a place to install a second hard drive and installation could not have been much easier. It went without a hitch and I installed the Maxtor software, which was very simple.

To do this job again would only take a few minutes.

So far it is working as it should.
