Did an update Saturday to Windows SP4 from SP2. Had problems right away with being disconnected from the net, but that has stopped. On Tuesday I noticed problems with mouse -- hourglass blinking next to pointer when off the internet -- no hourglass when on the net (have the latest driver). When I restart my computer an error box pops up saying something about cannot initialize... can't get the entire message as the computer restarts right after. Also, when I go into the window's help files and I click on something underlined for more info I get an error message that says "Internet Explorer Script Error." I have IE 5.5.

Would appreciate your opinions on how to solve.

    Thanks!

You're not having a good run Jeane. ;)

    Internet explorer script errors...
Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and tick Disable script debugging.
These errors are usually due to coding error(s) on the web page, or coding that is not fully compatible with IE. Nothing you can do so best to disable the error message.

Other problems, check the event viewer in Administrative tools through the start menu for clues. Also reboot and hit the pause button to pause the screen so you can read the entire "cannot initialize" error. May end up rebooting a few times till you synchronize hitting the pause button to read the message.

    Event viewer

Disable Script Bugging is already ticked. The message box I get when I click on a link in Windows Help is: Internet Explorer Script Error. An error has occurred in the script on this page. Error: Object doesn't support this property or method. There is a long URL listed and then it asks, Do you want to continue running script on this page? Either way, I still get the same error box.

    Event Viewer:
Under System Log: Lots of listings for: Error -- Source DCOM Under Application Log: Lots of listings for: !Warning -- Source= PlugPlayManager

I do not know how to interpret.

    I really appreciate any help!

With the event log errors, pick a couple that are representative and post them here. The easy way (and to make sure you post all the information) is to open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text-only copy to your clipboard) and paste that here.

By golly, Microsoft doesn't make it easy. Search their online support and technet pages all you want for that exact DCOM error and no luck. Search for the specific DCOM server telling the search engine to use the exact phrase 00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046 and no hits.

However, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;288367 clearly has that DCOM server listed. It belongs to MS Word from versions 97 thru 2003.

Having said that, I have to add I don't have a clue how to solve the problem but hopefully the info in this thread and in that link will allow someone to come up with a bright idea.

    Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using defaultLaunchPermssion. The server is:{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
    The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable

Reading between the lines on this: The DCOM server (identified by GUID as
'Microsoft Word Document') is failing to start because the permissions set for default launch are broken. You can see it complaining 'Unavailible' when its trying to lookup the authentication information.

First thing you should do is to fix up your DCOM permissions. the tool is called dcomcnfg you should be able to launch it from the start->run. You need to touch the default launch permissions to reset the values for default, look for broken stuff, etc.

The RSVP error is benign, and can be ignored. If it bothers you, you should uninstall QOS from network places->properties.

    re the script errors:

    I believe 2k default install is w/ IE 5.0 and SP2 is 5.01 or 5.5, and SP4 is 5.5.

I suggest upgrading IE to version 6.x.

There were major and minor changes in the IE scripting engine between 5.x and 5.5 and as a result many applications such as html help and software install scripts will result in errors, even if "display script errors" is disabled in IE settings.

IE 6.x fixed some of these script issues and has more backward compatability with earlier coded scripts in applications and install programs.

Thanks to you all for the help!

    A few more questions:

When I go to Start and Help and click on a link for more info, the link does not work and the error box pops up instead with the "script error." Do you think the update to Win2000 SP4 had something to do with it? What other things could be causing this?

In the dcomcnfg, when changing defaults, does that mean I should "add" or change users?

i'd remove a user, hit apply, then add the user back in. The goal being to force it to rebuild the ACLs thru change.
