I have an Ultra ATA/133 cable that I just got last fall. I read online that all Ultra ATA cables support cable select. However does the mainboard need to be newer in order to use it? Will my 3 year-old FIC AD11 board be able to use cable select, or does it need to be a brandnew board?

My three years old EPOX 8KTA3 works fine with Cable Select. As a matter of fact, since I installed a mobile rack - it ONLY works with Cable Select.

I would think that all motherboards that support ATA100 and above, which requires the same 80-conductor cables as for Cable Select, will work with Cable Select.

Actually, I think that the "selecting" occurs in the drive, not the motherboard. As soon as the drive is powered up, it detects which connector it is on and sets itself to either master or slave and then tells the motherboard which. (Not sure about this, though.)

    Edited:

After a quick google on FIC AD11, am I pretty sure that it will work. It seems to have the same chipset as my EPOX!

    Coincidence or what?

Your board uses the AMD 761 chipset? What southbridge does it use?

No it doesn't use the AMD 761, it uses VIA KT133A but the southbridge, VIA VT82C686B, is the same. As I understand it, the southbridge handles the IDE controllers.

I have the information on FIC AD11 from here .

Just jumper the main HD as Master and the other as Slave - Cable Select may/may not work on your board, bit most likely will.

Major problems after installing slave HD

I installed the slave hard drive, and it was detected when the machine booted up. But when I go into My Computer, it's not there at all. And neither are my DVD-ROM drive or CD-RW drive. I opened the case back up, and sure enough my IDE 2 cable (CD and DVD) was disconnected, so I went to reconnect it and saw that a tiny piece had been chipped off the socket to connec the IDE cable to (yeah, I know I messed up).

I put the IDE 2 cable back in as best I could and turned the machine on. I watched the optical drives and saw their lights come on as they always do when it's booting up, and I got the ESCD update message meaning the BIOS had been updated with new hardware (assumably the optical drives).

However the CD-RW and DVD drives still don't show up in My Computer or Device Manager. My new hard drive won't show up in My Computer, but it is listed in Device Manager. Help, please.  :(

I went into Disk Management, but when I right click Disk1 there's no option to initialize or partition. The only menu options available are: New Volume, Convert to Basic Disk and Properties. I'm attaching a screen cap to show you what I mean.

edit: Found out what I was doing wrong. The drive is now ready for use. But I still don't have my poor optical drives.
