I have been getting a lot of "low on virtual memory" boxes lately. I have been reading some articles that one of the members thought would help. It suggested changing my page file settings.

I am not really sure what numbers to put in there. This is what I have:

    Virtual Memory (C)
    space available: 28847 MB
    Initial size (MB): 96
    Max size (MB): 192

Total paging file for all drives
    Minimum allowed: 2 MB
    Recommended: 382 MB
    Currently allocated: 100 MB

One of the articles said you can make the Minimum = Maximum and can set them to about 500 to 600 MB?

Can anyone tell me what I can safely put in the Initial size and Maximum size?

    382 and 382
This will (should) allow enough room, and it won't get fragmented.

From a thread posted by Suzette in the XP forum. I found and suggested the following that clears things up a little. Initial size = 1.5x the amount of RAM installed. Maximum size to 3x installed RAM.

With 512 or more of installed RAM set the initial size to 0.5x and the maximum to 3x.

Works well for XP and W2K3 (running as a workstation), so can't see why it would be different for W2K.

3x max ram is WAY overkill.

    reboot,

    I respectfully disagree!

When I had only 256 MB RAM and a pagefile of 384-768 MB, I had low memory warnings when working in PowerPoint and a picture editor simultaneously. That's the reason I added another stick of 256 MB RAM and set the pagefile to 768-1536.

    Jeane,
how much RAM do You have?

The "Recommended: 382 MB" figure indicate to me that it is 384 MB.

I know that You're not on XP but that OS would recommend 576-1152 MB.

Hi Jeane, from your post you have 64 mb of ram. Go to your pagefile settings and set both max and min to 0. Reboot and then go back to your pagefile settings and set min to 384 and max to 1200. You should look at increasing your ram if possible 256 is great for 2k.
