I have Win 2000 SP2 -- did the web update to SP4. Now when I go on the internet, after a few minutes, I get knocked off. When installing, I closed my Norton AV and do not have a firewall installed. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

If you're using dialup, I would check what Modem driver you are using, and update it from the manufacturers site. I would also check some of the Modem settings and insure you are not using both hardware and software compression. Suggest you ONLY use software compression. Enable hardware flow control and Enable modem error control should be ticked. If Modem error control is not ticked then a reliable dialup connection is unlikely, and this will most certainly cause disconnection. Maximum speed should be set at 115200 for a dialup connection, faster can cause instability issues. You will need to tunnel down through your internet settings and Modem settings for some of these.
If your system is using "a standard modem" driver then that could be your problem. The standard W2K driver is OLD and not tweaked for your particular Modem.
Check your dialup timeout settings, also under the IE tools tab.

    Jeane...

On this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=157253#post157253 mam posted that she also could not get into Windows Update. Do you have the KB835732 MS Hotfix installed?

Don't you need that hotfix for protection from the "Sasser" worm? I just had a new modem installed about a month ago, a V92, and the driver does not state that it is a standard one -- is that how I would know if it was? Also, when I went into IE and under "View Object" I saw listed an Acive X Control stating it was damaged. Does that have any relevance?

    Thanks for all your help!

Jeane--I understand your problem is not reaching the Windows Update site, but a general failure of IE after a few minutes. Are you getting any error messages?
Are you paying an ISP for internet access? If yes, then call them. You are not getting what you are paying for.
Are you using broadband or dialup?
What is the name of the disabled ActiveX control (right click|Properties)?
I seem to remember there was a virus, spyware, etc. that caused a problem like this, but the name escapes me.
Have your run your antivirus with latest virus definitions? Have you run a scan with a spyware detector (such as AdAware or SpybotS&D) also with latest reference files?

The Active X Control ID is a long number between two {}. It says it is damaged and is 0 bytes. I have been on the internet more today, and have not been kicked off so far, so I am doing better. I will contact my ISP - Earthlink if any more problems come up (I use DUN).

    Thanks for all your help.

Jeane--You can probably learn what that ActiveX control is here
http://sysinfo.org/bholist.php (if that page give you an error message, click refresh or try a little later)
Just paste the long number into the Search line and click the Search button.

    download

I have not been getting disconnected from the net and everything seems to be working well, but ran across something that I wonder if the update had something to do with. After I downloaded the free version of ZoneAlarm (I haven't installed yet) my pointer had an hour glass next to it that wouldn't stop. I tried to do a restart of my computer and it froze -- I had to restart manually. When the screen came in my desktop shortcut icons were all the same -- the one with the flag -- then they popped back to the right icon. After that everything went back to normal. Could this be related to the update?

    re-started with problems

I re-started my computer again through the start menu. When I got to my desktop I still have that hourglass flashing next to my pointer. I also got a "low on virtual memory" message when I got on the net. I have been getting that message quite often lately.

    changing page file size

The articles pointed to changing my page file size, but I am not really sure what numbers to put in there. This is what I have:

    Virtual Memory (C)
    space available: 28847 MB
    Initial size (MB): 96
    Max size (MB): 192

Total paging file for all drives
    Minimum allowed: 2 MB
    Recommended: 382 MB
    Currently allocated: 100 MB

One of the articles said you can make the Minimum = Maximum and can set them to about 500 to 600 MB?

Can anyone tell me what I can safely put in the Initial size and Maximum size?
