My son has XP and I have Win 98SE. We are networked via a crossover cable. For over a year ICS has worked fine (with XP PC as Host, 98 as client) until last week. Now, after each reboot of the XP PC, ICS will not work. To get it to work we have to disable ICS on the XP PC and then re-enable it. ICS then works fine again until the next time the XP machine is rebooted when we have to go through the disable/enable again.

We have up to date AV on both PCs, all patches are up to date and Zone Alarm running on both. We have tried disabling ZA but the above problem still happens. Even when ICS is not working, both PCs can see each other and Ping each other etc.

I suspect my son has downloaded something (game patch etc?) that is causing this. Grateful for any ideas........

One place to check is "DHCP" in Services of the XP PC. This should be set to Auto. Had the same problem once and that corrected it. Worth a look.

Mudd, I've checked DHCP in Services as you suggest. It is set to Auto already so it must be something else.

    Thanks anyway though.........

Hang on a while as there are several Network people that will probably be online later today and they are Experts! They will get you to going without a doubt.

Next time it quits on you, do the following on the XP PC and post the contents of the text file you will create to a reply in this thread.

    start~run~cmd followed by
    ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt

Note the spaces before and after the > symbol.

Do both the XP host and the 98 client lose the ability to get to the internet?

The PCs 'seeing' each other simply indicates the network is still running. ICS is only needed to allow the two PCs to share the modem and get to the internet.

Networking is a grey area for me, but I would check the date setting on both PC's - the 'Lease obtained' date is tomorrow, today being Monday 24th May.

PeteC - OZ does strange things with time and it was probably tomorrow there when he ran ipconfig.

simond - even with all the info set to auto-assign, ipconfig should have showed you the information.

You may have some problems with the TCP/IP pieces on the laptop. You might try the winsock repair tool from http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

    Newt,

Don't want to make an issue of this, but the guy's from Italy, not Oz. Same time within an hour to UK :)

Oops. He certainly is. Oops. Don't know where I got Australia.

In that case, the time thing could certainly be the issue unless the machine somehow has the wrong time zone set.

Set computer2 to use DNS servers at 61.9.192.14, 61.9.128.15, and 61.9.192.15 and see if things improve.
