    Say ..

    Can somebody point me to something (like a webpage) or enlighten me on how 'Mapi' hooks work?

    For years, I nutz'd around with email clients and word processor programs and could never get anything to work but plain text....am puzzled to say the least ...here is what happened ..

    Windows 98se, Foxmail as default client, 602 pro suite....fresh install with Internet explorer 6.0 sp1 ...

    I create a small presentation on 602 text (doc format....pictures, paintbrush text...the whole 9 yards) out of curiosity ...I click send on the file menu....Outlook Express pops up ...fuss's about not being the default client (told it to leave me alone) and then presents me with an almost exact duplicate of the file I created in 602 text ...(paragragh spacing was the only thing amiss) .....I was astonished...and none of it happens thru the clipboard because I have a capture utility.....I need to know just for the sake of my sanity ....LOL

    Cheers

    Thanks......

    Jim
    Thanks a bunch ....your a gentleman and a scholar........much obliged, look's like I simply did not use the correct search terms when I googled it...

    Btw, it's possible I am way out in left field on this.....call it gut instinct....but me thinks the newer riched library's needed to run the new version of Foxmail had much to do with all this....I hestitate to say all this cause I am aware this is Courier/Calypso country (blush) ....but Foxmail works extremely well running it's own proxy to allow me to grap messages form my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts....the only other thing different here is the addition of Mdac 2.8 off of the MS$ security CD ....never the less, Outlook Express grabbed those riched library's with zero fuss and is using them....I'll keep you posted on the progress here...

    Cheers

    Well ....If these folks know what they are talking about, I am way behind the power curve here ........sheesh....

    Quote....

    "One of them is something called "MAPI Hooks" and it seems to work
    - but, unfortunately, is no longer supported in Outlook XP. Thank you "

    By the way Jim....some of that programmers stuff is WAY over my head ...LOL

    Found the basic hook...

    Finally;

    Turns out, the secret is "Mapistub.dll" ....what happens, when a user installs Microsoft Fax off the Windows 98 CD ...that DLL usually get's deleted...one of it's functions is to determine how to handle the Mapi Call....

    If, the Mapistub.dll is still present, but things aren't working ...
    Click Start > Run .....type in "fixmapi" (executable in the System dir)

    What all this means is ...the abilty to compose emails in your favorite word processor and click File > Send .....and viola (which in my case is 602 Text from the 602 Pro Suite )

    If anybody out there is interested in the registry entry's, I can post the link to an article in the Msdn library that explains all the gorey details... :D

    Cheers

    Caveat ....

    As with all things Microsoft.....I stumbled accross this little gem and thought it should be mentioned ...Quote;

    "CAUTION: If you are running Microsoft Outlook 97 or Microsoft Outlook 98, running Fixmapi.exe replaces the Mapi32.dll file with a version that renders Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 unable to start. When you try to start Outlook, you receive the following error message:

    Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.
    If this error message appears, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    193681 OL98: (CW) ErrMsg: Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook
    "
    Endquote

    Gotta love'm ... :rolleyes:
