    so I ran an antivirus program and deleted a few problems. Also went to win.ini and deleted a file with windows updat. Now on startup that problem is gone. Problem now is I cannot open certain files. I am getting a window opening that says, Windows cannot find wlbu.exe this program is needed for opening files of type "application "

    Knowing which virus' you had would help. I suspect the virus has added it's self to system.ini shell=explorer line or there are still registry association problems with substitutions for extensions and shells that this thing may have used.

    You may benefit from downloading and running a registry fix for executables such as:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html (exefix08)

    or going to the security forum for some of those handy dandy on-line virus scanning links.

    I could be wrong but I think your going to find that wlbu.exe is not a standard win98 file but probably related to the virus you. The fact that windows is still requesting it indicates that there's a still load line or an association problem left behind or worse case scenario is your still infected or reinfected.

    ========
    I believe Merlin is trying to find out if you still have some backed system files or registry files that may have pre-viral unchanged values.

    ========
    Any idea what this virus was?

    Try the exefix. You can't run programs (*.exe) because the virus has hijacked (for lack of a better description) the defaults.

    On-line virus scan....

    Amazing

    WOOOOHOOOOOO! Ok, it's almost there. I can open up my applications again. I tried using the exefix8, but that would not open. Then I tried the RX pack, and I really didn't know what I was doing but it worked. So Thank you Thank you Thank you. Now, as far as I can tell there is only one other problem left. When I start up my computer, as the desktop is loading, a window opens up that says Cannot find the file 'windows_updat' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct. Any suggestions? And thanks again Ann

    Ok, so I went back into that exe file and read a part where in the system.ini, the shell is supposed explorer then nothing else after it. mine had windows updat after it. I edited it and now everything seems to be right. Wow, I don't even know what I'm talking about. Thanks Again!

    What is your Virus program of choice and why isn't it up to date with a dat file that could stop what ever virus you found yourself infected with or at least cleaned it up thoroughly once found?

    While I'm glad you seem to have recovered from your recent problem it may not last. Exactly how is a bit unclear. I'm not totally convinced your in the clear and you shouldn't be either. I, again stress a visit to one or two free online virus screening sites:
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=online+virus+scan

    Perhaps, depending on the program you are using and how you use the program some thought may need to given to finding a better more reliable program.

    It's better to be safe than sorry. Just flash back to the sense of panic and frustration you've just had. The next episode may not be fixed without a total format clean install of windows.

    =============
    This is for the Archives since Controls was so speedy or I was so slow. I can only guess that the problem in running and merging the fixreg file was a side effect of the inability to run *.exe files. The usual procedure to overcome this is to restart in dos mode and rename regedit.exe to regedit.com. *.com's are still executibles but are not effected by the virus association changes or cripples. Restart (maybe in safemode) and run the exefix file that was downloaded or copyNpaste bolded text into notepad and using "quotes" name this file "fixexe.reg ". Save it to your desktop and run it.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile]
    "EditFlags "=hex:d8,07,00,00
    @= "Application "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open]
    @=" "
    "EditFlags "=hex:00,00,00,00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "%1\" %* "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
    @= "%1 "

    Of course this is only part of a virus cleanup and that's where knowing what virus your dealing with is most helpful. There's load/run lines that have to be looked for and corrected. These may be in system files such as win.ini, system.ini, *.bats, config.sys, the registry. There may be file overwrites.....etc. Look at me blabber on and on. The above should help in at least recovering enough of the system control to do a virus scan either online or from within a Good Updated Virus program.

    I know this is a little late for you Controls but it may help another further down the road.

    Ok, I have saved all this great info. Hopefully it won't be needed. I am also planning on Saturday, purchasing a new virus protection program. Thanks again! Bob
