I am out of practice with dial-up connections and I need some help. On my in-laws Win98 system, the dial-up connections box appears at startup. The box will also appear, sometimes, when opening the Control Panel folder. I have changed all the connection option and nothing seems to help. The system is virus free and has had ad-aware clean it out.

I'm sure there is a setting that I am missing, but I don't know what to look for. I will only be here, 10 hours from home, through Sunday so i hope to figure this out before then. Thanks in advance!

Hi Mike you might have already tried this.

In the Control Panel open Internet Options.
    Click the Connections tab.
Put a dot beside "Never dial a connection." and click Apply
    and OK.

    picard,

Thanks for the response. I have tried all three dailing options and none seem to last long, if at all. Anything else I can try? Thanks!

    You might look in msconfig.
Start\Run type msconfig and click OK.
    Under the Startup tab,
look for any entry related to the modem and uncheck.
    Click Apply.

I agree with Picard - anything in the Win start-up that starts with RAS
is likely to be the culprit.

Thanks. This is what I have listed on his startup tab (no RAS items):

    PPWebCap
    ScanRegistry
    SystemTray
    LoadPowerProfile
    AEZBProc
    StillmageMonitor
    EM_EXEC
    HPDJ Taskbar Utility
    Symantec Core LC
    CamMonitor
    Share-to-web Namespace Daemon
    Load QM
    Norton Auto-Protect
    ccApp
    TaskMonitor
    LoadPowerProfile (yes, two of these)
    SymTray- Norton SystemWorks
    ScriptBlocking
    ccEutMgr
    ccSetMgr
    Lotus QuickStart
    Event Reminder
    Norton System Doctor
    Forget Me Not
    Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

Here is a lsit of programs on the Ctrl-Alt-Delete screen:

    Explorer
    Ccapp
    Sysdoc32
    Loadqm
    Hpgs2wnd
    Ppwebcap
    Hpgs2wnf
    Em_exec
    Hpqcmon
    Abtezbp
    Stimon
    Systray
    Hpztsb06
    Rnaapp

It's confusing that the connection box keeps appearing. Sometimes, like this morning, it's impossible to get rid of it. You can click cancel all you want, but it won't go away. If I connect, then disconnect, it will go away then.

    Sorry, I misled you with RAS, remove r n a a p p - that's part of the
    RAS dialup.
    regards

    Merlin,

I can remove the rnaapp through CAD, but it returns at the next startup. I also went through the msconfig and see nothing relating to rnaapp there. Am I missing something?

I also went through the msconfig and removed all check marks related to Norton. The problem went away. I enabled them one by one and found two programs that would bring up the screen, ccapp and ccevtmgr. I can leave them disabled, but then the auto-protect and email protection don't work. The bad thing is that my father-in-law just renewed his subscription for another year. I will have to contact Norton on that problem.

Any ways, if you have any other suggestions for the dial-up box, I'm all ears! Thanks

    Mike

Just an update. The two Norton programs that I disabled worked for awhile, but has no effect now. Nothing seems to work for very long.

Rnaapp.Exe is called up whenever a dial connection is started, and runs while the connection is active. It will not show up in the startup. Then when the connection is not active, it will stay in memory for a period of time. I haven't timed it, but it seems to be at least 5 minutes.
Perhaps you should check the Live Update settings in Norton.

I agree with mark. the most likely culprit is the liveupdate in Norton. Also, look in Start --> Programs --> startup, and see if there's anything funny there. Normally anything there will show up is msconfig, but it's worth a look anyway.

    mark & Ryder,

Thanks for the responses. Nothing strange in msconfig, that I can see. The list is above. I have checked on the Live Update and it is not set to automatically check for updates.

New question-- I'm curious if this could be the cause. I haven't had time to check it out yet, but maybe somebody knows. Just before I left this morning, I checked his IE because it was giving a message at the top of the browser (above the toolbars- blue section). The message reads something like Internet Explorer brought to you by Mobius Communications. I thought this was strange so I checked on Help and About IE. I found this: Version 6.0.2800.1106IS. The it read "This is a customized version of Internet Explorer ". Could this be the problem? Anybody else have this on their IE browser? Mine does not have this listed on it. Could it be they installed some type of software that makes the dial-up box automatically pop up? If so, it's strange they haven't mentioned that to my father-in-law the three times that he has called about this. I will have to contact them and see exactly what is in this "customized" browser.

    Hi Mike
I also have the same problem, my dial up box pops up at random constantly.
I use McAfee online, so unless there is something simular between Noton and McAfee I don't think that is the problem.

I have a feeling that it has something to do with Outlook Express, but I don't know for sure or what it might be.

I hope someone will come up with an answer.

I am still waiting to hear from Mobius abotu their "customized" browser. I will probably have to contact them again. I probably won't find out much until I can get my hands on his system again. I'll post as soon as I find out anything.
