I cannot seem to be able to boot netscape. I am running Win 98 SE. It was working fine. The last thing I remember doing was right clicking on the small icon that was on the right lower tray.
When the system boots up, I usually see two small icons on the lower tray. One is on the right and the other on the left. The one on the left boots the program when left clicked. Now it does not do anything. The one on the right has completely disappeared.
    Any ideas? :(

    Welcome to the Forum, PhillipT.

    Hi Phillip,

By chance did Netscape crash, or did you update your OS, had Registry problems, or did you just reinstall Netscape or Mozilla?

The shortcut in the left tray is for the Netscape program, and the shortcut in the right tray is for Quick Launch, which leaves Netscape in memory for a quick startup. I would disable Quick Launch, as that feature is known for creating Problems. It can be disabled here:
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Quick Launch

Since you can't start Netscape, try making the edit while offline.

If your answer is yes to any of the above questions in the first paragraph, then here is the workaround:

    Back up your Profiles Folder(s)
    Back up your Plugins Folder(s)
    Using Add/Remove
    Uninstall Netscape 7.1
    Uninstall Mozilla 1.x (if installed)

    Delete the following folders:
    ~\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\
    ~\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE
~\Program Files\mozilla.org\ (if you installed Mozilla)

    Clear the C:\WINDOWS\temp folder

    Reboot your PC

Unrecognized third-party components will be removed from the C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla directory, and will need to be reinstalled. The Mozilla Profile will not be affected by the uninstall/reinstall.

This issue, known as the "Installer Bug" has been addressed in Mozilla 1.6, and Mozilla 1.7RC1. You may want to consider installing one of these stable browsers instead. The Netscape 7.1 Resource Leak, and Download compreg.dat bug, have also been addressed in the Mozilla Releases.

    Ramona :)

    Netscape 7.1 will not boot

    Hi Ramona,
None of the items in paragraph 1 occurred. It was working fine one day. I shut the computer down and the next day when it booted up, the quick start icon disappeared and I was unable to start the program. I even sought out the netscape icon in the program files directory and double clicked it as well and nothing. As I said, the only other thing that occurred the day prior was that I had right clicked the quick start icon and then closed it. Any other thoughts?

    Hi Phillip,

I would still use the workaround, since you cannot start the Program, you obviously have corruption.

    Hi Ramona,
I did as you suggested, and then reloaded Netscape 7.1. All is fine now. Mozilla was never loaded. The files you asked to be backed up were never needed. The program came up with my profile intact. Go figure. I guess the answer always seems to be, "If it don't work, reload the program ".
    Thanks for your help.
