We cannot get Windows 2000 Pro installed on our desktop. It installed fine on the laptop. ON the desktop we get a tone of .exe error stating that prograname.exe has generted error and will be closed. So for instance when we click on netscape we get " netscape.exe has generated errors and will be closed." If we try to install our PCCILLIN antivirus program we get a ton of .exe error all realting to the .exes that are called when the program automatically starts after install.

We have looked everywhere for an answer. we have done 5 frest installs. One 98 > 2000 upgrade and nothing works.

Found 3 other persons that have this error but they have never gotten in resolved except one guy created a new user and using that user he was able to avoid the errors. I still got the errors when I created and used a new user.

ANY advice at all would be gretly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Vanessa

    also......

also.... just so you know, this is not a virus problem. Each install is done on a freshly formatted disc and we have tried 2 different harddrives. We have also removed all other hardware and drivers and peripherals. We have, compaired settings between the working computer and the desktop. We curently install programs as Administrator and log on using a user that has administrtior priveleges. We also try using the straight administrator logon. One difference I have found is tha the laptops windows2000 does not aske for a user name and password to start where the desktope does but I cannot see how this would be part of the problem.

Again, ANY advice at all is appreceiated

What are the machine specs? Do you get the errors in Safe Mode?

Have you tried replacing/reseating or removing RAM modules? Have you tried a different video card or updating the BIOS?

    cant use exe fix

Tried to use the exe fix.. cant use becuase all exes are blowing up incuding my zip program used to unzip the program you recommended.

We have tried using the recsue program on windows 2000 that supposedly fixes problems. This did not help either.

    Thank for trying though.

The more common causes would be bad or improperly seated memory, hard drive going bad.

    all done

OK people, thank you for your help. I found the problem it was actually application problems and not Windows 2000. Applications that stated they are 2000 friendly are not. Example Netscape 4.79 - not compatable ( eventhouogh Natscape claims it is) but when I use 6.2.2 I dont get any netscape.exe errors. Same with PC Cillin 2002. They claim that its Windows 2000 compliant but its not. I had to DL the NT version of PC Cillin 2000 and cannot use my 2002 upgrade at all.

Pass this on to anyone you know experiencing these problems.

    Thanks again for your help.
