Internet Explorer 6.02 shuts down when installing (or using) flash 7

I have been rebuilding my daughters Win98SE machine today. I started from a previous disc image where everything was working fine... I went to Windows Update and installed all the critical updates, and a couple of optional ones. Everything works fine until I go to a page which requires flash.
For example, On the PinnacleSystems site, I was prompted to download flash 7 to view the page. When I install it, the message appears:
.....MIE has encountered a problem and needs to close...we are sorry ofr the invonvenience....if you were in the middle of something..yadayadayada....
the option is given to restart the browser or not, and to report the error to MS or not. Any site I go to that requires flash, will subsequently display the message unitl I uninstall flash.

Details of the error: There is a 'ModName:msvcrt.dll' listed in the details?
I have:
1.) ran the uninstaller for flash 6, and 7.
2.) removed the shockwave related objects in the IE 'view objects' box...
3.) removed the folder 'Macromedia' from Windows...
4.) installed the standalone flash 7
5.) read through some of the posts related to flash problems here, and on the Macromedia site.
6.) internet settings are at the'medium' level.
7.) I ran the IE 'repair' tool from add/remove.
8.) Just to trouble shoot, I also selected the option to revert to an earlier version of IE in the remove dialouge for IE6 SP1. It reverted to IE 5 (have not used for sometime), and I reinstalled flash, and there is no problem on flash pages, but I do not want to use 5.0

Essentially, if I uninstall the flash, it is fine. If I install it, I get the error.
I have a time pressure with this puter-could someone help me on this.
I have the feeling this is related to one of the updates I installed-(included was net-frame)

Milt - on another thread in this section a user mentioned curing a similar issue by putting a fresh copy of msvcrt.dll (extracted from the 98 install CD) on his PC. Worth a try anyway.

I need to know how El Parro extracted the msvcrt.dll from the Windows set-up file. He said something about using SFC? Whats that?

BTW, I just copied the file from another win98 machine (while I was waiting for this answere), to a floppy, and copied it over to the other machine with a boot floppy. It did resolve the issue, but I wonder if there is any merit in using the original file from the disc?

The system I was having a problem with, was restored from a disc image containing IE5.xx. The problem occured when I installed IE6 SP1. I have later images of the same system that had IE6 on them. I had, at some point, upgraded to 6, then upgraded to SP1 when it was available. I went back and checked one of these images, and there was no problem. I had need to go back to this original image (with the 5 on it) as I was making a series of changes in hardware that would have been cleaner from that point. Sooo,
my point is that the corrupted dll seems to occur just when I go from IE5 to SP1, instead of to the originall IE6 then SP1. Does this make any sense? I may have made some other changes to flash or something during the original upgrade sequence that I do not remember. Just trying to understand why?
