2 i sent an email attachment with a picture to a person who also has XP home and he stated picture was too large, and being an eml. file he did not know how to shrink it. i sent a copy to myself and opened it to " "Slide & fax viewer" "he also should have "slide & fax viewer ".????

 I've not seen this in OE and no option on my version of OE 6.
Reduce the size/resolution before sending? - resolutions higher than 72 dpi will be magnifiedon the screen
Picture and Fax Viewer - yes.

You would need an imaging program like Paintshop Pro or maybe IrfranView, but on second thoughts it could be that your friend is running his screen at a different resolution to yours.

I suggest you save the image (jpg?) to your hard drive and email it to him as an attachment which he can save to disk and open in Picture and Fax Viewer by double clicking on it (can do the same without saving the attachment, just click on the paper clip in Outlook Express and double click on the image file).

Click the paper clip and then click save attachments. Save the file and then double click on the file you saved to open it.

Maybe slightly crossed wires here - I run OE with the preview pane open and the method given by Zander and myself works fine.

If you double click the email in the Inbox the message opens with the attachments listed in a box above the actual message. Double clicking the attachments opens it in Picture and Fax viewer if it is an image file - or in the appropriate application if it is something else - *.doc opens up Word .... To save attachment right click on it and Save as.

    Hope this clarifies matters!

You may be right about wires being crossed. I just assumed (I know, I shouldn't do that) you were talking about the preview pane paper clip. I myself don't use it (preview pane). I always do it the way you mentioned above but it seems most people I know use the preview pane. So... ;)

Also Tools>Options>Read tab "automatically download messages when using Preview Pane"

Save pic to hard drive. Download and install "Image resizer " . Navigate to pic, right click and follow the prompts.

It sounds like your friend knows less about OE than you do, so I doubt the size of the pic is really the problem. If it wasn't sent as an attachment, as in "embedded in the body of the email ", he will have to right click on it to save it. If the pic exceeds the size of the window he is opening it in, he will have to maximize the window to see the whole thing at once, or scroll it.

    As far as this:
Have you checked the settings in View and Layout from OE? If nothing else, toggle them around. Clicking the customize toolbar will let you arrange the bar any way that suits your work style.

    Ps

Isn't running the Preview Pane in OE a security risk? (Zander and PeteC, tsk tsk ) It's enabled by default in XP, and I always disable it for "security "- is the problem of downloading and running malicious script automatically, resolved? I don't trust the "don't let OE open attachments that could potentially be a virus" switch, and I do receive exe files from time to time, from known and expected sources. If it is not a security risk to run the Preview Pane, then maybe I'll try it out.

Johanna, you said" "Reduce the size/resolution before sending? " "- resolutions higher than 72 dpi will be magnifiedon the screen

    How reduce??

i do not understand why he just did not click ion paper clip, and have it go to Picture & Fax Viewer
i also do not know why he says he can't handle an emlfile
i do not know what kind of file it is (or care) and i can open it
Would using Netscape be a reason he can not work it,he used to use Nets. with Win M.E. but i do not know what is in his "puter other than XP os

    Pic received - delightful :)

Shows up just fine in Preview Pane and in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on both my monitors - 22" at 1280 x 1024 and 17" at 1024 x 768

    Johanna

MIR11 forwarded the email to me - pic is an attachment at 72 dpi
