I went to a page on a site that has a name like xyz.swf. This is a Macromedia Shockwave file. I'd like to save it on my computer, so I right-clicked, but the box that popped up contained no option to "save file ".

I thought maybe I could find the file by searching my computer for a .swf file that had the same date as the date on which I visited this site, but I did not find anything.

Can anyone tell me a way of saving this file to my machine? Tnx.

Can search download sites for programs to "capture" the image.

Socrates22 - Welcome to the Board :) - do you have Macromedia loaded to your m/c?

Can always try right clicking file > 'Save target as'

    PeteC et al:

I have Macromedia Flash [? Player?] on my machine; if I didn't, I wouldn't have been able to see the image (it's a moving image, btw).

When I click on File, at the top of the page, "save" and "save as" are shown as not available (i.e., show up as faded). When I right click on the page, none of the choices is anything that wld allow me to save the image.

But there has to be some way to capture the file. If I can see it on my screen, I'd say there's a high probablility it exists somewhere on my computer (tho the http Headers sent with this file might make it difficult to find).

There is a free download of a Flash Movie Extract which will allow you to save swf files that are on your PC. If you open such a file, it should stay on your PC until you clear the Temp Files. So you can open this small program and it will show you the swf files on your PC. It will play them in it's small window to insure you can save what you want. Some advertisements are in that format so you will see them also. From FILE, click SAVE AS and you got it.

Check this link http://www.colorpilot.com and look for Flash Movie Extract Pilot from the DOWNLOADS. As I remember it's about 500KB or so.

    Dumb solution

A very low-tech solution is to look at your IE Cache, if using IE, and sort by Type. The .swf files will be there somewhere. Find the file and drag it (copy) to some nice place. I've been doing this for the last 8 years and it works most of the times. Note that sometimes the .swf may require a .flv file which actually contains the swf movie. You may have to sort by website to see that association. And the SWF-FLV association is hard-coded so you have to rename the files to match the file on the web site (i.e., remove the dumb "[n]" component from the file names that IE puts in when you copy the file).
