Local Game networking .... how to?

HI,

I have 4 cpus in the house all shareing internet (high speed) on a linksys 4 port router and I want to network mine and my boys so that we can play games with/against each other. How do I get them to see eath other as I have no clue and have never set up a network or if it is even possible with the equipment I have. I need help from step one Thanks for your input

In that case, it is not only possible, it should be fairly easy to get the PCs talking. As to the game - if it is designed as a multi-player network game, that also should be a doodle.

The key here is that your Linksys device is a 4 port switch and has a built in router. The switch portion where the PCs connect to the device puts them on a network together.

the OS' are win 98 se on both machines that want to play the game. I want just the two to talk to each other is that possible? the other two are win xp and one is a lap top thats not used much.

I dont know how to get them talking and I guess thats my biggest problem rofl... all this time on a cpu and still dont know squat!!! hahahaha thanks for your time Newt.

Easy enough then.

- Add the NetBeui protocol to both network setups
- Have the two PCs in the same workgroup and with different PC names.
- Have their primary network logon as Client for Microsoft Networks
- Enable file and printer sharing on both
- Share (windows explorer and it's an option) whatever folders you want.

ummmm ok I found it

I changed names of cpus and and under workgroup I left both as WORKGROUP .... computer description is named TOOL on both and they still can find each other ughhhh

You need to do all the things in the list - and maybe try different computer descriptions - Tool-A and Tool-B for instance.

Note that even after you enable file & printer sharing, you have to share something before they can 'see' each other.

If you create a shared folder Share1 on PC-A and then from PC-B do start~run~\\PC-A\Share1 it should open the shared folder.

I am really sorry I have not responded more to your help I have been really busy. I got both puters to see each other but only one can accsess the other. When
I try to accsess my puter from the boys mine crashes.. BSOD . Is there somewhere I need to do more set up then what you have instructed me to do in your last post? Hope to hear from you soon and I am sorry for bothering you with a private message I just didnt see any reason to create a new post on old subject matter

Odd - not sure what would be causing the BSOD. What error message does it give on the blue screen?

IM sorry I didnt get that and I really dont care to try to get it to do it again LOL but I am wondering if it has anything to do with my firewall? Kerio 2.1.5 installed on both machines and I have all lower ports blocked 1-1023 and net bios are blocked 137-139. What do ya think?

I think the firewall is very likely the issue.

It should have a way to set it for all ports open for specific machines but closed for others. I would allow all machines on my LAN to access any port on the other LAN members except maybe 135.
