    Service Controller XP

is a handy interface that allows you to control your Windows (NT/2000/XP) services. You can instantly see which ones are running and view detailed information about all the standard Windows services. In addition, the program provides information that lets you decide whether to enable or disable a service. It prevents you from accidentally disabling critical operating system services and suggest whether to disable a service or not based on the use of your computer (e.g Default, Gaming, Internet Gateway etc. )

Thanks. I'll try it. Sounds like I can recommend it to clients, too.

Great find Steve. I've installed it. It will make looking up Black Viper's site all the time, less tiring! :)

    Thanks

Hey, Dave, this is one for the CD! Great find, Steve! Easy to use. And like Daizy said, easy to work with, (esp on other people's comps!) Thanks for sharing- I know this one will be in my bag of tricks! :)

Great little program - everything in one place - magic!

Shame about that flashing beacon though - very irritating :D

Hey, PeteC, too bad we can't use the old "electrical tape on the dashboard" trick for flashing beacons! One of my cars is always informing me that it needs service (DUH! It's got 200,000 miles on it!) and the little red light on the dash is distracting. A tiny piece of black tape solved that problem!

One thing I noticed while playing with that program last night was that in XP HE the firewall is NOT enabled by default, while XP Pro's is. When I get some time this afternoon, I'm going to look that up. I did not catch that, even after all the installs I've done, Home and Pro. I wonder if SP2 will enable Home's firewall?

The SnapFiles site is a recent find. They've got some great stuff.

I'm on XP Pro and the XP firewall is not activated by default!

I wonder why installed systems behave differently. Are the various "editions" of XP CD's not the same?

If they are the same, why these differences?

I also installed this program and thought it would be very handy to check up on Services.

However, after a little while of that flashing beacon I uninstalled it. I could not find any way to stop it from flashing. Maybe someone else will.

It will strongly suggest that option to you unless it detects a 3rd party firewall and in that case, will recommend the 3rd party but also that you only use one.
