Yesterday I was going to create a new folder and found the "new" button had disappeared from my file menue. Surely someone else has already encountered this problem and solved it. So how do I get it back?

I ran Norton Systemworks registry scan and repair subprogram---no help. Also ran system file checker---nothing identified.

I have tweak ui, but have not used lately. Did look there for a solution to this problem, but did not see anything that looked like a solution.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for the idea, Jim! I added the registry key as described, but it had no affect.

I suspected this might be because the article seemed to refer to windows 95 and I am running windows 98SE.

I have another nearly identical computer (for my wifes use) on which the "new command " is still present and works fine. So I looked in the registry of that computer to try to gain some insight. I see no such registry key in that computer!

So I am still puzzled and still have no "new command ".

There is a little known restore function in windows 98. You must go to a dos prompt (hold down the ctrl key when booting and select the dos prompt). then type:

    scanreg /restore

and select a date prior to the onset of your problem.

Safer than editing the registry? Depends.

Not too many of the folks here are unfamilar with scanreg /restore, but it may be of little use now. By default Win98 makes 5 backups of the registry, once per calendar day if the machine is restarted, provided ScanRegistry is checked on the startup tab in msconfig. You can increase (or decrease) the number by editing scanreg.ini with notepad. It's located in C:\Windows. Open it and look for a line that says MaxBackupCopies=5. Change the 5 to a higher number if you want. Save and exit.
Unless the max had already been edited to a higher number, or he hasn't shut down every day since the 29th of March, assuming the problem started then, backup registries will have the same problem.

    noahdfear,

"hasn't shut down every day since the 29th of March, assuming the problem started then "

We don't know that, do we? I would have suggested it sooner if I had seen the post sooner, but...

"Not to many of the folks here "

Seemed to me that the simplest possible solution would have been suggested first, if that were true.

The restore function may also help sometime in the future, and it can't hurt to mention it, can it?

Thanks for the input folks. Merlin's reply provided a very useful "work around" until a complete l solution is found.

Possibly Abraxas has offered the complete solution, if I understand it correctly, his reply is providing what the registry should say? Is this right? Understand I am running on 98se.

Anyway, I have not tried this change yet, because I am still working on some things that may have caused the problem in the first place. I have been experimenting with various graphics cards. I suspect changing drivers may have caused some registry problems.

It may help you to know that I have built my computers from mostly salvage parts (poor people got poor ways) or (curiosity killed the cat). ----and I continued to upgrade and change them. So these are salvage video cards and downoaded drivers.

Sometimes my changes and "improvements" lead to problems I have never seen before, but maybe some of you have.

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

Byron I too tried the norton and tweakui for this prob, to no avail. And I also suspect the recent upgrade of my nvidia vid drivers. If I find a solution, Ill post here, u do same ok? Mebbe abraxus can elucidate a lil more on his post. But I may backup my registry and try those entries anyway, if i can, to see what happens.

Sorry about that. I must have been in a hurry that night.

I'm switching to a 98 machine later and I'll see if I can figure out what I was thinking. But you can always find your entries in that area of the registry, export them, and try mine.

Or wait and I'll post the entire reg file for you to use.

    Possible easy fix?

    Say....

Not 100% certain about this, but either way....it is a no harm done type fix...

Go to control panel > add/remove programs > Microsoft Internet exploere x

Highlite that entry and click the 'add/remove' button....a menu will appear with the option to repair the installation....select that ...click ok...

If memory serves, (like I said I could be wrong)....that function is handled by shdocvw.dll .....if it is corrupt or missiing, the above should fix it ...

    Cheers...

    Thanks, Triger, that did work!

Thanks, Abraxas, for all the extra effort!

Zapped, interesting you should point to Nvidia drivers as the source or trigger for this particular problem. I too had been having difficulty with Nvidia installation. Finally got thme working properly though.

well, i noticed i wasnt alone in not being able to play Everquest with the newest Nvidia drivers 56-something, so i took the suggestion of another player and used the older 53-something ones, which work fine for that. Thats what I get for listening to Sony warn us to use the newest drivers to play with most recent game patch. Bah. So it occured to me that futzing around with the vid drivers may have goofed up something else, since I had been using older than 53-something ones to begin with anyway. If it works, don't fix it, aye? That's like peep saying to always use the newest bios flash for mobos. The last 2 times i did that on a puter, i wound up having to wait 2 extra minutes for it to shut down every time i shut down Windoze. Upgrades bah. Everbody want us to be their ding-dang beta testers is all thats about. Hmmph.
