AARRRRRGH- $500. for new camera, can't transfer pictures!!!!! Windows error message, "A USB device has malfunctioned"

I have uploaded pictures from this brand new camera only once before, last week, worked without a hitch.

When camera connected to USB termial and turned on, get USB connection sounds, USB symbol in system tray, when clicked on get error message "A USB device has malfunctioned"

Olympus Camedia software says it can't find camera.

Get this in event viewer, system after event:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7023
    Date: 5/10/2004
    Time: 12:34:32 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: CATASTROPHY
    Description:
The Application Management service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

    This on reboot:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7023
    Date: 5/10/2004
    Time: 7:14:34 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: CATASTROPHY
    Description:
The Human Interface Device Access service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

These are new error messages, at least, the first time I've seen them.

If I hadn't gotten the error messages in system, I would think it is a camera problem, but the error messages seem to indicate a OS problem???

I swear, I'm so frustrated and aggrevated I'm about to take an axe to this camera and machine. Just before this, my Sonic DVD recording software is telling me that my Pioneer DVD-R drive has the wrong voltage or some such c-r-a-p, even though it functions normally otherwise. GRRRRRRRRRR! It will be another subject in a software post.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

    Martin

Edit #1: I forgot, device manager USB contains "Unknown device" when camera is connected.

No, I have no idea what to suggest, but hold off on the ax- surely someone will! It probably isn't Catastrophy's fault (nothing ever is!) Have you tried reinstalling the camera software yet? Did you try another USB port? Did you speak to Catastrophy gently, without any cuss words?

Jeez Johanna, I keep learning more and more about less and less, and pretty soon I'll know absolutely everything about nothing.

It seems to me that if the system cannot load "Human Interface Device Access service" that reinstalling the camera software would not help.

Also strange is other USB devices seem to be working OK without the Access service.

I'll try doing the software over though, just for covering the bases. Will post results.

Thanks for not blaming Catastrophy, she appreciates it.

Does camera have "mode" switch? - check manual.
    e.g. mode to upgrade BIOS?

Try changing her name. with a name like CATASTROPHY you're asking for trouble. ;)

Seriously though, you've tried another USB socket (as Johanna suggests) and checked for physical damage/contamination of the USB lead?

Uninstalled/reinstalled the camera from the device manager and checked the manufacturers site (and windows update) for drivers.

Paul, the other name Martin considered for Catastrophy was "Train Wreck ". He buys her lots of digital flowers and cyber candy, and she's been behaving pretty well...up until this camera thing...but, he left her for a few days, and you know how jealous and bitter women can get...

Go to Control Panel\Admin Tools\Services and make sure that the Human Interface Device Access setrvice is set to manual or automatic. Then make sure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is set to automatic.

(Though you really should not even need the Human Interface Device Access setrvice for the camera.)

Then go to Control Panel\System and click the Hardware Tab. Open Device Manager and uninstall the USB Controllers and reboot. Windows should detect (new hardware found) the usb controllers and load the drivers for them at boot.

Do these steps above with the camera and any other usb devices UNPLUGGED.

:D I ate some of that cyber candy myself when I got back last week and have been seeing some really bright colors dancing around Catastrophy's tower lately. I think she is really angry.

Update: I uninstalled USB from device manager, Windows reinstalled on boot. I uninstalled and reinstalled the camera software. I changed USB cables. I changed USB ports. Turned on camera, Windows recognized it and installed it as a drive, drive "H" w/o any camera software being used.

So, it is fixed, :) although I'm still getting the error message re: Human Interface device cannot find the file.

 Especially since all USB devices are functioning normally. I just wish I knew what she is telling me.

Thank you one and all, your advice and counsel is valued and appreciated. So is your humor, I'm certainly traveling in good company.

Martin, how long have you been married? And you are still trying to figure out what women are telling you? Catastrophy is saying "Nah-Nah, I got him to kill a whole afternoon playing with ME!!!" ;) I think that means she likes you more than she is letting on... However, never make the mistake of assuming you really know a woman's true intentions. We don't even know half the time, or we just arbitrarily change our minds!

Seriously, did you do what TonyT said to do? I think that should eliminate the error you are getting. If it doesn't work, can't you Ghost back? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't leave XP's System Restore running, either, do you? In any case, TonyT's suggestions ought to put it right. Good luck, and post back.

    Human Interface Device Access
You may not have any peripherals that require this service. If one of yours magically does not function anymore, set it to automatic. Namely, scanners with function buttons (fax, copy) or even an "Internet" keyboard with volume or play controls.

As I said earlier, you should not need this service for the camera. You should be able to safely set this service to Disabled.

You also said that you reinstalled the camera software. It is possible that one of the software apps in the camera package requires use of this service. Therefore you should be able to uninstall the camera software completely and still be able to download the images from the camera, using ONLY the built in xp imaging capabilities. All that is needed to grab the pics is for Windows to set it up as a drive when you plug in the camera. And xp probably already has the camera drivers supported by default. If not, all that is needed from the camera software cd is the drivers, no software is needed.

I have a usb scanner and a kodak camera. XP had the drivers supported for the scanner and the camera already. And I have Human Interface... disabled and use no 3rd party camera software.

Hi Tony: I see that you are right about that. I was able to upload the pictures from the new camera using some older Kodak software which I prefer to the Olympus Cameidia software. As the camera actually installed as drive "H ", I could have just copied and pasted the pictures.

I'm going to disable the Image Aquisition Service and see what, if any, impact it has on my perifials. I suspect it will have no impact, as, with it not working as per event viewer, all perifials (USB) function normally.

I just hate to see those red Xs in event viewer.

Thanks for your help and input on this, I will post back if any negative results, otherwise this thread should just fade into history.

    Martin
