Got the blue screen of death with this error code:

    Error Message: STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x00000000, 0xb2000000, 0x00020151)

Ran Dr. Watson and did not find anything.

    Hey jsmith50...

I did a Google search on your error and came up with many hits.

I've posted MS Knowledge Base here...

    1) MS KB329284...

    CAUSE
This behavior occurs because your computer processor detected an unrecoverable hardware error and reported it to Windows XP. To do so, it used the Machine Check Exception (MCE) feature of Pentium processors or the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature of some Pentium Pro processors. The error may be a result of any of the following:
    - System bus errors.
    - Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems.
    - Cache errors in the processor or hardware.
    - Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor.
    - Other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems.
    - Vendor-specific detected hardware problems.

Have you added any new hardware or has any hardware been giving you problems lately?

    2) Have you checked to make sure your PC is Virus/Worm/Trojan free?
    - Online Trojan Scanner
    - Online RAV Virus Scan

    3) Try downloading Windows Memory Diagnostic and check your RAM out.

    4) Have you opened up your PC to see if your CPU is covered with dust bunnies and causing your CPU to overheat? Are all your cooling fans working? You can use MotherBoard Monitor to see if it's overheating.

    Stop Error

Thanks for the quick reply. I have added a HP 1600C printer to the OS one day last week and also added a HP 5200C USB scanner on the same day.

I typically scan for viruses using Norton weekly. As soon as I got the stop error code, I ran a scan. Norton found no viruses.

I will download the diagnostic utility mentioned in your reply and run it.

Get back with results later this week.

    Thanks for your help.

    Jim

    Jim,
The combination of printers and scanners on some XP systems can cause problems. Suggest you may have to reverse the order that you installed these two devices and see if that helps. Also try removing one of the devices.
Check the HP site for any suggestions and get latest drivers for both.
