Can anyone tell me what this spring with the hook on either end is for? It was in my computer case, though I don't know where. Does anyone know where it goes or what it does and if it's necessary?

Hey shadowhawk, that impressive array of hardware doesn't seem to have anything with a spring on it- unless ya' have a spring-loaded door on your pc case ;) - it must've wandered inside from somewhere else (?) Anywho, doesn't look vital for pc innards :)

Draftees- don't want or need- been there done that. Look Who's been pushing it {clue}.

I now have a suspicion it might've fallen off one of my removable drive bays. They're removed by pulling a lever and sliding them out. If this is the case, I'll try to reattach it next time I go into the belly of the beast.

Yes, very impressive hardware. Had no idea they were makin such advanced springs nowadays.

You're hiding something - How do you know it fell out? you must have opened the case? and if so, why? or picked up the case, else how did gravity come into play? and how big is it - measurements?

You're lucky you have a tower case, otherwise with a desktop, that spring may have fallen on the Mobo, and we don't want to think about what could possibly happen then.

Guilty as charged. I actually found it on the bottom of the tower. I just thought "fell out" sounded cuter.

    Could you have been mistaken?

I didn't see the spring listed in your moniker.

    replace it!

By all means, since it was in case, put it back, firmly connecting both ends to something non-electrical.

    And add it to signature!

Yesterday, I fiddled with a computer and saw not one but two of these coil springs, attached to ...... ;) ...... well, this information should have a price tag but since everything is free on this BBS ...... ...... the release mechanism on the panel to which the MotherBoard is fitted. It can be tilted outwards from "the back" to do work on the MB.
The coil springs were some 25 mm (1 ") long and 4 mm (1/6 ") in diameter.

    Any resemblance?
