Hi all, Win98SE here on two PCs with network cards of different makes.
They do not communicate correctly - basically, both can see the other but copies fail
in both directions. I have been on the '98 Networking-Setup-Roundabout many times.
Does anyone have a diagnostic prog for a local LAN -
    - client/adapter/protocol compatibility
    regards

Different brands of network card shouldn't be a problem. And you probably have all the diagnostic tools you need already availaable.

    Are both PCs running TCP/IP?

How are they networked? That is, direct cable nic-nic or via switch or hub?

Hi Newt - thanks for the reply.
The cards are cable nic-nic. Yes, both have TCP/IP.
What I am looking for is a LAN testing program that can diagnose
protocol mismatches, sharing problems and generally check a LAN's
    integrity.
I have just established, that I can copy new files on a machine to the
other one. Replacing files ends up with the recipient file being deleted and
then - after a while - the message the "Network Component no longer
    available"
The MS Network check tool is a nightmare I try to avoid, if that is what
    you refer to.
    regards

MS Network check tool - never used that one. From what you say, sounds like that is just as well.

There may well be a tool such as you want out there somewhere. But the various command prompt options (net xxxx and a few others) have always been enough for me. May be a function of doing this so dang long though.

Things I'd do immediately to try and correct your problems:

    - set both network cards to the same speed/duplex settings. Start with 10Mbps Half duplex and if that works OK, try faster such as 100Mbps half duplex and then 100Mbps Full duplex.

    - get a fresh copy of the DUN 1.4 update and load it on both.

If you still have problems after setting to 10Mbps half duplex and loading the DUN 1.4 files, post back.
