On occasions when I click on a Bookmark in Netscape 7.1 I get the message "file contains no data" this has been happening quite regulary recently. The only apparent way I can get around the situation is to disconnect from the internet, reconnect and call up NS7.1 again! Why is this happening ?

    Welcome to the Forum, skypilot!

    Hi skypilot,

I get that error occasionally, "Document contains no data ". Deleting the Cache folder usually gets rid of the error.

Ensure that both Netscape and Quick Launch are closed
Open Windows Explorer and open your salted (*.slt) folder
    See: Profiles Folder Location
    Delete the entire Cache folder
Netscape will rebuild the folder on startup
    Also delete:
    history.dat file
    XUL.mfl file

Do this frequently, and you may want to take a look at the "Sticky" at the top of the Topics: Preventive Browser Maintenance.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Ramona :)

    Document contains no Data

Despite having carried out your instructions Ramona, the problem has risen again. It hasn't shown its ugly head for about 15 hrs but when I left the computer and switched it off. On returning and running the computer up again that horrible message appeared again

It also appears to be " link specific" i.e. it only seems to appear on certain links and not on others mainly on the two links I use most

On one of the links although it says "Document contains no data" when you clear the message the link displays as if nothing happened on another link no data is displayed :(

    H-e-l-p !!!!

Donald, what OS do you have? If it is a Win98 variety, you may be a victim of the infamous resources leak. And, only rebooting the computer would help. Restarting Netscape helps a bit.

    Donald,

Check your History setting, and ensure that it is set to greater than 0.
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

Ensure that your cache is not set to update every time you view the page. Clear the cache, then try setting it to "Once per session" or, "When the page is out of date ".

    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Cache

If those two sites set cookies, then delete the cookies, and see what happens.

    Donald,

What are the two sites where this keeps recurring? I would like to see if I have that problem.

Does WindowsXP have a Resource Meter? Check in Start | Programs | Accessories | Resource Meter
At least that's the location in 98SE...

If so, then run the resource meter in order to see if you are bitten by the resource leak bug.

    Ramona :)

    Donald,

Thanks for those two links. O.K., I read that eBay gets approximately 4-5 million hits/day. Your error is fairly common for that site, and if the camping site is a popular one, that could very well be your problem.

The only other workaround I have to offer is to try disabling your Firewall and your Popup Control, and see if either makes a difference.

    Ramona :)

    Document contains no data

    Hi Ramona,

Both are very popular sites, but why should this cause the error, since an equivalent error condition is not apparent with IE6

This error could make the difference between winning a bid and losing it on ebay, in consequence it is very serious - is anything being done to correct it ?

    Hi Donald,

I know you are frustrated, and I wish I had a magic wand and could wave it over your PC. There are bugs filed for both eBay, and the "Document contains no Data ". Doing a Google search on the error brought beaucoup users suffering from the same problem. Mozilla is working on the problem, and you can also do something. Vote for the bugs! Register at Bugzilla here: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/createaccount.cgi

Then go to the Bug and just above the "Additional Comments" field select:
    "Vote for this bug ".

    Document Contains No Data
    eBay

Mozilla is working hard on the 1.7 Release, and since the "Document contains no data" error is shown as severe, we can hope that it will be addressed in the final release.

I should add that some of the problem is at the eBay end...

    Ramona :)

Apparently some parts of Ebay are IE6 friendly only

    Thanks again :)

    Donald ...

You sound like a prime canditate for Firefox, Mozilla's stand-alone browser. I've been using it for a year, with very few problems, and it just keeps getting better and better. I wouldn't even consider going back to NS 7.x (sorry, Ramona ;) ).

Since you'd be coming from the NS suite (which you presumably also use for email), you also might want to try Thunderbird, Mozilla's stand-alone email/news reader client. I switched to it when I switched to Firefox and, again, wouldn't consider going back to a suite, either NS or Mozilla.

Re your specific problem with NS ... I, too, use XP Pro, but I use no cache with Firefox, and never have experienced the problem you describe.

    FF 0.8 and Thunderbird 0.6

Jim, Thanks for the advice, but prior to reading your post, I had already transferred to FF 0.8 and Thunderbird 0.6, trying the Mozilla 7.1 client en-route. :)
