This one brings me way back. All the way back to the days of DOS. I need to transfer an 8 Meg file from a DOS  machine file to a Win 95 machine :p . (Yea, I know, ancient. Neither of these are mine. Wish I could talk him into an upgrade, but to him, Win 95 is an upgrade :D). All I have available is a serial port and a floppy (no CD or USB). Can't add anything either because they are laptops. Neither machine can do internet, so if I download anything, It'll have to fit on a single floppy. I'm thinking back to the go old days of "Laplink" but don't have that available. I may have a copy of Ghost around here somewhere.

Any idea's where I can find a compact file transfer software that can transfer throught serial (yep, I have a null modem cable) and fit on a floppy.

Thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate all the help. :)

Free Zip apps that will (well, some of them) run on DOS and should allow compression and spanning of the file across several floppies if needed.

Davheili: DOS used to have a program it think was called Interlink or something similar. Not sure which version it was in but I think it was DOS 6.0. I used it once to connect a laptop and desktop together. Connects via a serial cable. As I remember it was quite easy to use and allows one computer to "see" the other. It is then just a matter of transfering the file using the Explorer.

Check your friends W95 machine and see if that program is in the C:\DOS directory. If so you may be on your way. :)

    Edit:
Here's a couple of links with more info: Interlink

    Interlink2

For more info do a Google search with the words "DOS Interlink ". Will give you lots of hits.

    John,
Thanks for the info. It is DOS 6.22 so it should have Interlink on it. This looks like just the ticket I'm looking for.

Your example "Interlink2" above even shows a DOS to Win 95 transfer.

    Thanks. :)

    JohnB,
Thanks for Interlink. My PC days predate the IBM PC, yet I never heard of InterLink, much less it being included with 6.22. I was fortunate with the WIN 95 machine because is was FAT16. Definate easy, free solution.

*** Warning *** for future readers, Interlink could potentially destroy a FAT32 partition. Read the links included by John.

Thanks John, I own you one.

    Dave

Thanks for posting back Dave. Glad it worked out for you. Have noted your comments re FAT32 and Interlink. :)

I just wanted to share a really cool file transfer program I found this weekend. FastLynx by Sewell Direct http://www.sewelld.com/. Unbelievably easy to use.

It supports data transfers via serial, parallel, USB (including 2.0) , and TCP/IP. Window (all flavors), DOS, and Linux. It fits on 1 floppy. And it includes a DOS slave that's only about 40K.

I gave it a try and it practically did all the work itself. Too bad I didn't have this when I really needed it. I guess I'll add it to my arsenal. :)
