I followed the Microsoft instructions of what to do if the computer was infected with the Sasser Worm. When I get to step 7 of Installing the Required Update (835732), it downloads OK, but it doesn't install--just sits there and nothing happens. I've tried to update my Norton Works and it just sits there with nothing happening. Any clues as to what to do now?
    Thanks.

    Step 7 ?
    " "Sasser Worm Removed-Can't" "
Are you possitive its gone ?

    I see four steps.

If your having problem installing patch's try either using the auto detect
Step 3: Automatically Check For and Remove Sasser
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp
or manually download and running it
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7E-1B6B-4FC3-90D4-9FA42D14CC17&displaylang=en

Having said that I am confused, a neighbor has the symptoms of this infection, when we attempted to use Microsoft's auto "check my PC for infection" it said it wouldn't work on the PC until the patch's were installed.

If you are still getting the countdown
    =====
If your computer has entered the shutdown stage, hit start, run, then type in
    shutdown -a
This gives you about three hours to get the patch installed, update the definitions, and so on.
then if you run out of time simply run shutdown -a again

    Reconnect the network/Internet connection.
Connect to the Internet, and get the patch. Then continue with the steps described below.

If the tool finds nothing, try the others listed further down on ms's sasser page, if no luck post a hijackthis log here in this forum,
First make a new folder, for instance C:\Anti-spyware

Get it here HijackThis Ver-1.97.7 choose save, NOT OPEN
Save it to that new folder, double-click HijackThis.exe,
and hit "Scan ". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, It will load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here.
    Close hijackthis and notepad.

    At the site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser_printxp.asp

titled "Windows XP Users: What to do if your compputer has been infected by Sasser "

There is listed 8 steps to accomplish. I have gotten through to Step 7 where one is to download and install the Security update 835732. I can down load the update but it doesn't install.

Unfortunately, one must have the update installed in order to do Step 3 and that's my problem, the update wont install.

    The worm might be gone.

Try turning off Norton. Windows update failures due to a virus scanner running has been an issue for years.

This is probably a stupid question but some times the simple things just slip by us...did you turn off system restore before you tried to remove sasser? If not you must becuase it won't with system restore enabled.

See I told you it was probably a stupid question...
