    Hi clo,

You most likely have a corrupt compreg.dat file. Look here for the file, and delete it: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components

    Next:
Navigate to the salted (*.slt) folder
    Profile Folder Location

    Delete: downloads.rdf (or rename)
    Delete: mimeTypes.rdf (or rename)

    Delete: history.dat
    Delete: XUL.mfl
    Delete: Cache folder

(The last three items are general maintenance, and should be deleted on a regular basis.)

See this page for further reference: Unable to Download

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    I AM DUMB

I have explored everything I can find in Netscape 7.1 folder and the only thing I could find was the compreg.dat file I explored all over and could not find any of the others. I went to tools and clicked on download manager and that is dead also thought maybe I could get something there. I am just upset about being so illiterate. I am 100 miles at the least from any kind of help or repair. Thank you

    clo,

If you have Windows 2000 or XP the files will be located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings/user_name/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/profilename/xxxxxxxx.slt

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

    Windows 9x/ME
    C:\Windows/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/profilename/xxxxxxxx.slt

I finally got there.....thank you! Grandma is really slow at this. Sorry. I tried deleting while online and some can't be done. But when it comes to cache there are 4 yellow folders.... I have cache, cache2, cache3 and cache trash. Do I delete all of them? Oh thank you so much for your patience.

    Hi clo,

Yes, you must always close Netscape and Quick Launch before doing any editing of files.

Delete each of the Cache folders. Netscape will build new folders and files when started again.

    Deleting Compreg

Well Romona, you did it again... :D

You helped me restore my download manager by deleting the 'compreg' file
so I no longer have to use IE to download images or recipes from the Net.

You are truly a wonderful person.

    All the Best,

    ~tgw

    Can't delete XUL.mfl File

I have followed this thread and was successful in deleting all mentioned files except for the XUL.mfl file. When attempted I receive an error message:

Cannot delete XUL: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.

    Correction to this problem????

    glasslaw,

You must exit Netscape and Quick Launch before editing/deleting files. The error is telling you that the file is in use, a clue that the browser is open.

    The Saga Continues

    Hi Ramona,

I followed your instructions to a "T." Both your reply to my message and your reply to clo in April.

I was able to delete the XUL file only AFTER I finally checked in my Task Manager and found the Netscape.exe process running in the background and I stopped the process.

I ran a search on all .slt files and -- much to my amazement -- found profiles which I had assumed had been cancelled during a complete reinstallation of W2K Pro. So, I deleted all cache folders including a cache trash folder and all of the files mentioned in your e-mail to clo.

When I rebooted and tried to download with Netscape -- same problem.

    Suggestions?????

    Hi glasslaw,

You might have had Quick Launch enabled, and that could be why Netscape was in the Task Manager. That's why I try to always include Quick Launch, when I tell users to close Netscape and Quicklaunch before editing.

    Delete: compreg.dat
Delete downloads.rdf (located in the *.slt folder)

Did you take a look at this page: Unable to Download

The only permanent fix for this is to either upgrade to Mozilla 1.7.1, or Netscape 7.2, when it is released.

    Post back with the results...

    Ramona,

Worked. Strangly, this is what I did before which did not work. Regardless ....

I also downloaded Monzilla 1.7.1. Before I "mess up" tell me if I have to uninstall Netscape 7.1 and Netscape 4.77 which resides on my computer. Checking my add and remove files, I do not find a Monzilla program (any number) listed. Checking the installation instructions for Monzilla 1.7.1 seems to direct me to uninstalling Netscape or creating an additional profile using the Profile Manager.

Your help -- once again -- would be appreciated.

    Hi Glasslaw,

You can keep Netscape Communicator 4.77, and Netscape 7.1, and still use Mozilla 1.7.1.
NOTE: that it is MOzilla, not MONzilla... ;)

Before you install Mozilla 1.7.1, create a new Profile. Once installed, direct Mozilla to the newly created Profile. This way you won't have to worry about Mozilla picking up the Netscape 7.1 Profile.

You can download Mozilla 1.7.1 here:
    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.7.1/

You might also want to take a look at this thread which contains information about Security updates:
