    Goodmorning all,

I hope I explain this right so that I might get the proper answers. 2 weeks back I was on my daughters puter doing my normal upkeep of the system... updates for adware programs and AV.

I then tryed to go to windows update site to check for any needed critical updates to keep her safe from all the little nastys out there and when I got to the site I got a prompt telling me this....

"New windows update software is required "

well I clicked on next to DL the required software to get to updates and it seemed nothing had happened. I was still stuck at this software required window. I read a few threads posted here and there that might of had something to do with this subject/problem and none of them really seemed to make sence or give a solution.

Next I wrote to Microsoft support and this is the responce I got from them...

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Update Support.

I have taken the ownership of the case and will be assisting you with your Windows Update issue. I really appreciate the information that you have provided and the efforts that you have taken to get this issue resolved.

I understand when you are attempting to access Windows Update, you receive the repeated message "New Windows Update Software Required" (Re-occurrence of "Update Now" button). If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know. I realize the importance of getting the issue resolved at your earliest convenience as your concern is my concern.

NOTE: Temporarily disabling Antivirus (such as PC-Cillin, Norton Anti-Virus etc), Firewall programs and Pop-Up Stoppers, while you use Windows Update sometimes does solve this problem. Be sure to enable them again when you complete the update process.

This issue that you are experiencing on your system is occurring as a result of corrupt ActiveX controls. I have researched this issue and found certain steps that will address your issue. I have listed these troubleshooting steps for you to complete, and would request you to try them out at your convenience. I would appreciate a reply from you to let me know if the steps did indeed help you resolve your issue. To resolve the issue please complete the following steps:

Remove the Windows Update ActiveX Controls

    1. Click Start, click Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. Type “iuctl.dll, Iuengine.dll†without the quotation marks in the "Search for Files or Folders named:" box.
    3. Make sure that the Look In option indicates “Local Hard Drivesâ€.
    4. Click the Search button.
    5. Delete all copies of these files.

once this steps have been completed we need to clean boot the system:

    1. Click Start/Run
    2. Type “msconfig†without the quotation marks and click OK
    3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup and then unmark the “Load Startup Items†check box.
    4. Click the Services tab and mark the “Hide all Microsoft Services†check box
    5. Now unmark all of the services that remain.
    6. Click Apply and then click Close
    7. Restart your system

After completing these steps access the Windows Update site by going to the following link:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Your feedback is very important to us, to further enhance our support hence I would appreciate your confirmation whether the Resolution Steps addressed in resolving the issue for you.

I took the name of the tech sending the message/instructions out as I did not think it was pertainant to use it, nor did I have permission.

I followed his instructions and now windows update tells me that I have to be an administrator to get to updates and I still do not know If his solution worked. The person that uses the puter is my daughter and she is the administrator and her name and pass still wont let us update.

I hope this post will get me some help/answers as I am very concerned that updates have not been done for a while. Thanks for your time and paitence.

    Very best regards,
    FireDancer

I sugggest a complete Trojan/Worm and Virus scan of the WHOLE SYSTEM.

It may or may not be the case for you but I was having problems with Windows Update on this machine using XP. I was getting the same message plus others.

I ran Moosoft Cleaner3 and it found a Trojan/Worn called MyWebSearch. ( or something like it ) Once Cleaner3 quarrentined it was immediately well.

    Windows Update worked immediately.

Have you checked the Windows Update Log for any errors?

    For Win98/ME/WinXP --> C:\Windows\Windows Update.log
    For Win2000 --> C:\WINNT\Windows Update.log

A quick way to open this log is to just type the path in the "RUN" menu...

Got this info from a good Windows Update trouble shoot page...http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html. Actually the whole site is pretty good.

I'm also going to assume you've gone through Windows own "Windows Update Troubleshooter page. This has helped me out a couple times.
