The Problem I am experiencing is from a Laptop (Dell Latitude Cpi A400XT PII 400 MHz) Running Windows XP Professional SP1
I have a BT Voyager 1020 Laptop Adapter plugged into the PCMIA Port, and configured (From Software Install CD) with the following options set:

1.Security 64-bit WEP using Set Keys, the security HEX code as given by the Main Router (BT Voyager Wireless 2.Network 1250)
3.SSID is set (Same as Main Router)
    4.Operation Mode Infrastructure
5.Channel 6 (Same as Main Router)

My Networks Connections reports wireless connection unavailable and the status is always scanning, and never connects. I have disabled windows to configure my networks settings, and have also tried it without any security settings. I have also proved the PCMIA Port, by plugging in other cards (USB Hub)

The PC I am trying to connect to is a HP Pavilion t461 P4 3000 MHz running windows XP Home with the BT Voyager Wireless Network 1250. I have connected to the Laptop using the USB Connection this works fine, I cannot try the RG45 Connection as there is no RG45 input on the Laptop.

Any help would be appreciated, as I have tried every combination possible, but it just sits there Scanning !
My only other thought is could there be any interference from other electrical sources, I have turned everything off for a Radius of 10 Miles (yes it is getting to me)

    Thank you

    Mick

I have a similar problem with a BT voyager 2000 wireless router. I have narrowed it down to the WEP encryption. If I enable WEP then I have the same symptoms. Have you tried turning it off just as an experiment? It may be a similar problem. It may give you a clue where to start looking.
I have not been able to resolve this but as I have no close neighbours to steal bandwidth from me I haven't lost sleep over it and probably haven't tried hard enough.

I have already tried disabling the WEP encryption, but still the same problem, Thanks for the advise anyway.

On both PC's, use windows to configure the wireless connection.

Set the channel to auto on both rather than use a fixed (ch6) channel.

Check that both pc's are not setup for ad-hoc connection (alternatively you may want to try an Ad-Hoc connection for both) I actually use Ad-Hoc but you have a wireless router so should be a direct connection or something similar? But any things worth a try (as I found out!).

As previously mentioned disable WEP security on both PC's.

Lastly unplug any wired LAN, and you may need to setup an IP address, from memory on the laptop only?? use say 192.168.2.1 (2,3,4,etc) and subnet mask as the default when you tab to it. I think it's something like 255.255.255.0??
On the desktop I think you leave the IP address on auto. or is it vice versa?
Sorry I spent nearly 3 solid days getting my Laptop and desktop running in Ad-Hoc mode so I think I may have blocked out some of the hundreds of things I tried. ;)

    Finally PRAY! :)

    Just remembered...
There are a couple of wireless rollout updates that suspossedly fix a number of wireless issues as well. I found these via the MSKB site
The one you probably want is KB826942

    Paul,

Thanks for your time, to my problem.

Installed the Microsoft Updates on both PC's, with no effect to the problem.
Have carried out all the checks you recommended, with the exception of setting the Channels to auto. I can only set a Frequency number (Identical on both PCs). Also tried setting a static IP Address rather than Obtain IP address automatically. there isn't any other network connected to the laptop.

Unfortunately the Laptop still sits there scanning !

It can only be a Wireless issue because I can connect the Laptop via a USB Link from the router all works fine then, of course the intention is to use it remotely in the House and Garden (When it stops raining!)

Sorry to see you still have problems Mick.

I spent nearly 3 days getting my Toshiba laptop talking to my desktop.
Then when the Laptop internal modem died, I (for warranty purposes) was required to use the recovery CD's to restore to the original configuration before it was agreed the modem was indeed faulty. After spending MANY hours updating/configuring the laptop back to its former state before the recovery, it only took 5 minutes to get wireless up and running. I did have a lot of screen dumps taken in anticipation of another 3 day effort though.

I'm convinced wireless is like that. A bit of Voodoo magic!

Might be worth uninstalling ALL wireless and networking components on both PC's (including the network bridge you probably have) and starting from scratch again?

    Goodluck. ;)
