    I've noticed I've started to get the following error in my System Event Viewer... I get now every boot. Doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference apart from my BSOD problems (see my other thread "BSOD: Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_area" which I don't think it's to do with.

    =====
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7000
    Date: 09/01/2002
    Time: 22:42:06
    User: N/A
    Computer: WXPTOWER1
    Description:
    The ASCTRM service failed to start due to the following error:
    The system cannot find the file specified.

    For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    =====

    The other obviously not quite as serious (I don't think) is in the application event log.

    =====
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Userenv
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1517
    Date: 07/01/2002
    Time: 20:45:47
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: WXPTOWER1
    Description:
    Windows saved user WXPTOWER1\Si registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

    This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

    For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    ======

    I tried doing as it suggests, but it made no difference.

    Btw, MS and lots of other forums I've posted in and searched in don't have anything on these. Anyone else getting it?

    ASCTRM service is a real player thing. You might try an uninstall of real player 8x. If that doesn't completely take care of the problem, you could then (after the uninstall) remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASCTRM

    On the registry issue - do I understand that you have no user services running? All are either local or system of some sort?

    Ah, thanks, must be because my oldish version of realplayer isn't compatible with XP ... thanks tons for that info, i'll get rid of it. Interestingly though, why's it trying to load a service for it at startup??

    I don't think I have any user services... is there a easy way to check? in services in computer management??
