I'm at a loss! I've run all the major products to get rid of pop-up ads on a WinXP system. Each product seems to find an exposure and corrects / deletes related files, folders, registry entries but I continue to get pop-ups???

The pop ups apear while in and after closing IE.

What else do I need to do? Help!

    Thanks,
    Kelly

Hi KellyP - Welcome to the Board :)

I assume you have run Spybot and Ad-aware with the latest reference files.

Not all popups are related to spyware/malware - many are legit albeit annoying.

You need a popup stopper - try the Google Tolbar - includes a very effective popup stopper and is recommended on this Board. Some firewalls also perform this function too.

    Thanks for the reply PeteC.

The reason that I think there may be some spyware code running on this particular PC is that it's on a home network with 2 others (similarly configured) that don't exhibit the problem. Might be my imagination but IE also seems to load and run slower on the PC that has the pop-up problem.

I've used stoopers before but I feel like i'm fixing a symptom instead of addressing the problem!

Would a log from something like: HijackThis help???

Post a HijackThis log by all means, but don't fix anything - let those on the Board expert in these logs post recommendations.

The most common popups that appear in XP even after closing IE are due to Messenger service running. Go to start>run and type services.msc and hit enter. Locate messenger in the list, right click and stop then right click and properties. Set to disabled.

Do post a log. There may be other things going on. :)
